Re: Medical marijuana advocate loses battle with cancer (The News, Oct. 22).

Along with many other U.S. citizens, I am grateful for the work Michelle Rainey has contributed for the cannabis legalization movement.

I wish Michelle could have lived long enough to see the end of the devil law known as cannabis prohibition.

Evil is being exposed, change is imminent.

Ending the vulgar, immoral act of caging humans for using what God says is good on the very first page of the Bible will become reality.

Thanks to Ian Mulgrew and The Vancouver Sun for alerting the world to the sudden passing of a most remarkable woman. Confronting serious ailments and, at times, a malevolent criminal justice system that cares more about symbolism than promoting sensible public health policies regarding cannabis, Michelle Rainey faced it all with an infectious sense of hope, laughter, keen intelligence and love.

Canada has lost a great and caring human being; her loss is already being felt well beyond the nation's borders.

Comedian Tommy Chong has felt the sting of the Bush administration's war on all things related to marijuana. For Chong, the nightmare began in February 2003, when police helicopters and a bunch of agents with dogs launched an early-morning raid on his suburban Los Angeles home.

In the acclaimed documentary a/k/a Tommy Chong, Chong says the cops first told him he wasn't under arrest. In fact, they were busting his Internet bong-selling business as part of a massive U.S. government crackdown called Operation Pipe Dreams. After U.S. drug agents tricked staff at the family company into shipping bongs illegally to Pennsylvania, Chong pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute drug paraphernalia in order to spare his son and wife from prosecution. He was sentenced to nine months in jail on the second anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

With Courts Striking Down the Government's Monopoly on Supplying Medical Marijuana, Private Growers Are Clamouring to Capitalize on Pot's Commercial Potential

DUNCAN - Eric Nash can barely contain his excitement waiting to hear from Health Canada whether he can start growing marijuana for 250 patients.

That would be just the start. There are tens of thousands more who are ailing across the country clamouring for his organic B.C. bud.

"There is a great opportunity here for the government to collect significant tax revenue currently being lost to the street market," Nash, one of the best-known legal cannabis producers, enthused.

Re: Public pot festival a sad display, Soundoff, April 24

My life depends on cannabis 24/7, and, believe me, I do have a very meaningful life. I walk everywhere when possible, use local transit, carry hemp bags for shopping, do one hour of cardio five days a week at my local gym and work full-time.

During all that, as a holder of a federal medical marijuana licence, I smoke 10 grams of cannabis a day to combat nausea, chronic diarrhea and pain from Crohn's disease, which I've suffered for 20 years.

Celebrating the "420 Festival" is my God-given right seeing as how I should have been dead by age 30 -- which was six years ago.

VANCOUVER -- The province's self-styled Prince of Pot and his two of his colleagues will face an extradition hearing on Dec. 1.

Canadians Mark Emery, Michelle Rainey and Greg Williams all face charges of drug trafficking and money laundering in the U.S.

The three were arrested in Canada in August 2005 at the request of U.S. officials because of Emery's Vancouver-based seed sale business and strident pro-pot activism.

In court yesterday, two weeks were set aside for the hearing, one starting Dec. 1 and another in February 2009.

The hearing had been delayed while both sides tried to work out a plea bargain. The process began again last month after Ottawa nixed a tentative deal between the 50-year-old Emery and U.S. prosecutors.

VANCOUVER - British Columbia's self-styled Prince of Pot, Marc Emery, and two colleagues will face an extradition hearing in B.C. Supreme Court starting later this year over American drug-trafficking and money-laundering charges.

At a hearing to set dates Wednesday before Associate Chief Justice Patrick Dohm, lawyers said they expect the proceedings will take a week from Dec. 1 through 5, and another week in February.

The three Canadians were arrested in August 2005 at the request of the U.S. because of Emery's locally based seed-selling business and strident pro-marijuana activism.

There's a massive cloud of cannabis confusion hovering around Marc Emery's extradition case now that the deal between the Prince of Pot and U.S. prosecutors has hit the skids.

Under the now-defunct arrangement, Emery's two co-accused, Greg Williams and Michelle Rainey, would have gone free while he served five years in Canada on U.S. charges of shipping marijuana seeds stateside.

Now, as Emery heads to another round of extradition hearings April 9, his lawyers will be armed with a new and startling precedent.

A tentative deal between Marc Emery and the U.S. government over money laundering and drug charges has been nixed by Ottawa, the marijuana crusader said Thursday.

Emery says the federal Conservatives have refused to go along with a proposal that would have seen him spend five years behind bars for selling marijuana seeds through the mail.

Under the defunct pact, Emery was to plead guilty on both sides of the border and accept a sentence of 10 years imprisonment on the understanding he would serve half, mostly in Canada.
