KALAMAZOO, MI -- Calls already are flooding city offices requesting information about receiving a license for a medical marijuana dispensary since the charter amendment's 2-to-1 passage on Tuesday, but city officials and proponents say it won't be that easy. The citizen-initiated charter amendment allowing three medical-marijuana dispensaries had 13,569 votes in favor to 7,542 no votes, according to unofficial results. KALAMAZOO, MI -- Proponents of a citizen-sponsored city charter amendment to establish medical marijuana dispensaries in Kalamazoo will participate in a public meeting about the measure Tuesday. Kalamazoo Patients for Safe Access, a nonprofit committee of area residents, is hosting the meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Van Deusen room at the Kalamazoo Public Library, 315 S. Rose St. The proposed amendment to Kalamazoo's city charter will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot. KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo's city attorney wants city commissioners to pass an ordinance making possession of marijuana enforceable by an appearance ticket instead of an arrest. The ordinance also would lessen the fee or jail time offenders would serve, and would free up police officers for other matters. Kalamazoo City Attorney Clyde Robinson wants the Kalamazoo City Commission to offer for first reading Monday an ordinance that would make marijuana possession -- except as permitted by law -- a misdemeanor enforceable by the use of an appearance ticket.
