Const. Joan Lovell Speaks To Group AMHERSTBURG - Sr. Const. Joan Lovell spoke to approximately 25 people at the Amherstburg Food & Fellowship Mission July 21 about drug awareness. Lovell was joined by Skills Link participants who also warned of the dangers drugs and alcohol can present. At the conclusion of a 25-minute video, Lovell said Amherstburg doesn't have a problem of kids living on the streets but they do offer resources for people who seek to get help. She said sometimes kids turn to drugs and alcohol as a result of an undiagnosed mental health issue. [continues 133 words]
It Will Be "Business As Usual" For The Most Part AMHERSTBURG -- It's basically business as usual as it relates to marijuana in Amherstburg. A May 16 court ruling is currently under appeal and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) are attempting to secure clear direction from the federal justice ministry with regard to whether simple possession of marijuana is an offense or not. "It's still going to be business as usual," said Amherstburg police chief Ray Marentette. "We're still going to be seizing marijuana as we always did." [continues 254 words]
AMHERSTBURG -- One person has been arrested and more arrests could be forthcoming in what is likely the largest drug bust ever in Amherstburg. A 55-year-old man of no fixed address was arraigned Thursday on two criminal charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and one count of theft under the Criminal Code. He has been remanded into custody. Police executed a search warrant at 256 Pickering Dr. Wednesday and seized roughly $500,000 worth of marijuana and approximately $50,000 of growing equipment. LEAMINGTON -- Police forces from Essex County, Windsor and outside the immediate area joined forces in the fight against drug abuse. Racing Against Drugs wrapped up Tuesday after two days at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex. This was the county portion of the event with it having already been held at the Cleary International Centre in Windsor. Approximately 4,300 students - mostly Grade 5 - toured the event where the various police and other agencies had booths set up. Other agencies include fire, customs, health officials and the Coast Guard. Mad Science was also there giving presentations. The Grade 5 level was targeted to get them one year prior to entering the Values, Influences, Peers (VIP) program. [continues 120 words]
