Editor,

Do the foolish politicians in Tulare county not realize that cannabis will soon be re-legalized for all? All the problems you site are a direct result of prohibition and the black markets they create.

These actions will only make it more profitable for people to grow and sell cannabis in the black market. You have to wonder if these same people are not being paid off to keep the price high.

Vallejo's facing another lawsuit by a former medical marijuana dispensary operator who claims the city violated his civil rights by raiding his collective last year.

In a Solano Superior Court lawsuit, Greenwell, Inc. founder Matt Shotwell alleges the city, Mayor Osby Davis and the Vallejo Police Department violated his civil rights -- including his right to free speech -- by targeting his dispensary for raid and closure in retaliation for his outspoken advocacy for local taxation and regulation of medical cannabis.

Greenwell was the first of at least six Vallejo dispensaries police raided last year. Federal and state agencies also participated in some raids. However, all of the cases fell apart because, lawyers argued, the dispensaries were in compliance with state law.

In what could be a significant ruling for medical marijuana defense, a Mendocino County Superior Court judge on Friday granted a motion to throw out evidence from a vehicle search done because the driver admitted to having the drug and a county-issued card identifying him as a medical marijuana patient.

Judge Ann Moorman ruled in favor of Mendocino County Deputy Public Defender Eric Rennert's motion to suppress the evidence used to charge his client, Kevin R. Go Kings! I would say stick to the classics. Grand Daddy Purple, Mendocino Purps, Grape Ape and Purple Kush (if you can find it) would all be good choices.

Let's talk about "purple" strains for a moment. While some cannabis strains are naturally purple (Black Domina comes to mind), and some plants will turn purple if allowed to flower in a colder climate, most of the time, the word "purple" refers to the flavor. Yes, good-old synesthesia strikes again. The purple taste reminds me of that old-school lavender-flavored gum you can sometimes find at a corner store. It's delicious.

Regarding your Oct. 20 editorial, no further research is needed. The results are already in. If the goal of marijuana prohibition is to subsidize violent drug cartels, prohibition is a success. The drug war distorts supply and demand dynamics so that big money grows on little trees. If the goal is to deter use, marijuana prohibition is a failure. The United States has double the rate of marijuana use as the Netherlands, where marijuana is legal. The criminalization of Americans who prefer marijuana to martinis has no basis in science. The war on marijuana consumers is a failed cultural inquisition, not an evidence-based public health campaign. It's time to stop the pointless arrests and instead tax legal marijuana.

You are quite correct that prohibition leads to all of the problems that you described, and many more, including imprisoning people who should not be imprisoned. However, the federal government is not legalizing pot anytime soon, regardless of what the majority of people want. Too many rich and powerful people make too much money from pot being illegal, and until we get a far more representative government, from one dollar one vote to one person one vote, and proportional representation so that people are not afraid of "wasting" their votes by voting for people whose policies they actually support, pot will remain illegal. So, we have to deal with reality as it is while trying to change it to what it should be.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to ask me a question. I like bud the most. Kief, hash and dabs are all pretty much the same. Kief is what you get when you collect the trichomes (all those little crystals on the bud, they are full of THC) from the pot plant. Compress that kief until the crystals pop and form a glob, and you have hash. Use some sort of solvent, like butane or carbon dioxide, to blast and freeze those crystals, and you get hash oil, also called "dabs."

Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that he would lead a panel of medical, legal and law enforcement experts who plan to spend the next 18 to 24 months studying how the state can tax and regulate legal marijuana sales in an effective way. Mr. Newsom, a Democrat who supports the legalization of marijuana, said the goal is to make recommendations that could be written into a ballot initiative in time for the November 2016 election. Allen Hopper, the A.C.L.U.'s director of criminal justice and drug policy, said the committee would draw heavily from the experiences of Colorado and Washington, which legalized adult use of marijuana last year.

Panel Will Consider Drafting Measure to Appear on 2016 Ballot

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom will head the American Civil Liberties Union's new panel studying marijuana legalization in California, with an eye toward drafting a measure for 2016's presidential-year ballot.

"Enough's enough. I can't sit back and support the status quo any longer," Newsom said in a telephone interview Thursday, citing the high prison and police costs associated with marijuana enforcement that disproportionately affects minority communities. "I don't want to be the guy giving the speeches after I'm gone about what we should've and could've done."

At the end of my Sept. 7 column, I asked you to respond to me about any area of importance to you, and I would show to your satisfaction how it was made worse by marijuana prohibition. So many of you took me up on my offer that I want to share my answers. So here goes:

Under our curent system, marijuana is the largest cash crop in California - No. 2 is grapes. But when a product like marijuana is made illegal, it is pushed underground. So these are some of the obvious and not so obvious results:

Dispensary Rules Change-and More Changes Likely on Horizon

Colorado and Washington are settling comfortably into their new normals on the marijuana-legalization front, with the feds backing off and Seattle cops even offering helpful tips on responsible pot consumption. (Do eat Doritos. Don't drive while high.)

But here in California's state capital, fitful prohibition laws keep the Schedule I narcotic off the tax rolls and in the homes of suspected criminals.

During the first week of October, Sacramento County sheriff's officials seized north of 250 marijuana plants from multiple homes, while city police violated two probationers after locating weed and handguns in their residences.

Jurors in West Valley Superior Court on Thursday afternoon did not find Swerdlow's suffering worthy of the $1 million punitive damages he was seeking after a 2007 incident at a Inland Valley Drug Free Coalition meeting in Rancho Cucamonga where he alleged false arrest and malicious prosecution.

A group of medical marijuana supporters is planning a ballot measure that would legalize, regulate and tax a small number of dispensaries in Riverside, which led the fight to ban such facilities.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Riverside attorney Jason Thompson filed paperwork seeking permission to gather signatures to place the initiative before voters. Thompson represents Riverside Safe Access, a local group of about a dozen authorized users and proponents of medical marijuana.

I gotta give you an update, man. Weed has worked wonders for my girlfriend (she's been diagnosed with bipolar II disorder). We've stuck to pure indica, and it relaxes and calms her. She was developing a pretty severe drinking problem before, and now, she'll just have a few puffs instead, and be happy for the evening. Thank you so much man, it really, really helped us.

Don't thank me. Thank cannabis. But seriously, I am glad it's working out for you guys. Keep in mind that I am not a medical professional, and your girlfriend should keep her doctor informed.

Bigger, dirtier crops, "light dep," and the Slow Weed Movement define the outdoor cannabis harvest this year.

Northern California is overflowing with seasonal laborers who are cutting down and trimming the state's outdoor medical marijuana crops this week, and experts in the field forecast a bigger, longer, yet more conflict-ridden harvest than in years past.

California leads the nation in domestic cannabis production, and the state's pot growers bring in hundreds of metric tons of the fragrant, cane-like bush every harvest season, researchers estimate. This time of year, East Coast wholesale brokers tour farms in traditional growing epicenters like Humboldt, Mendocino and Lake counties, where a seasonal influx of trimmers - manual laborers from all over California and the nation - are paid in weed and cash to harvest this year's crop.

At the time, Swerdlow was holding a box in front of his body, Chabot said.
