Pot activist Marc Emery, who was arrested Wednesday for puffing at a pro-legalization rally in front of Winnipeg police headquarters Wednesday, may have to refrain from lighting up at all summer, thanks to bail conditions imposed yesterday. "They've told me I have to be a good boy or I'll be spending the next 2 1/2 months in jail until my court date," Emery said yesterday. He was released on $500 bail about 3:30 p.m. yesterday, forcing him to miss a planned Dauphin stop of his cross-Canada Summer of Legalization tour. Emery said he would likely stop in Dauphin when he returns to Winnipeg for his court date, which should be some time in October. He'll appear today at a scheduled smokeout in Regina, but will have to watch his step. "I might have to have someone hold the joint up to my mouth or something, since it's not illegal to use marijuana, but only to possess it," Emery said. "I don't mind spending a night, or even a week, in jail, but two months is a long time. Plus that shows contempt for the court, and I only have contempt for the law, not the court," he said. Emery said Winnipeg police were polite during his day-long stint in jail, but he went without eating since they didn't offer him anything vegetarian. He said it was the ninth time he has been incarcerated. - --- MAP posted-by: Larry Stevens
