MARBLE - If it were a race, cocaine and methamphetamines would have been left behind by prescription medications as the biggest drug problem in Cherokee County.

"What's killing our people in Cherokee County is prescription drugs," Sheriff Keith Lovin said Thursday evening at Marble Springs Baptist Church during the second sheriff's town hall meeting.

More than 700 people in the state died from prescription drugs last year, including nine in Cherokee County, Lovin told the small turnout. "Four years ago we told the attorney general that prescription drugs are our biggest problem," he said.

Years ago, Gilberto Reyes was a major league catcher working with Orel Hershiser, Dennis Martinez and Randy Johnson.

These days, he's jailed and facing the challenge of his life. Four days before Christmas 2007, Reyes was driving a truck that slid off an icy freeway in northeastern New Mexico, right into a tangle of legal trouble.

The vehicle toppled and spilled a load of furniture, along with hidden cargo -- 420 pounds of marijuana, bundled in 42 cellophane-wrapped bricks. The drugs tumbled onto the snowy ground after the crash.

The shocking spectacle of a respected Wayne County judge, a crackerjack prosecutor and two veteran cops standing as defendants in a courtroom confirms the war on drugs is lost.

Former Assistant Prosecutor Karen Plants is accused of wanting a conviction so badly in a narcotics case that she corrupted two Inkster officers and compromised retired Judge Mary Waterstone. All were career warriors in a hopeless conflict.

The possible slide of good guys to the wrong side of the law epitomizes the drug war's failure.

4 CN MB: PUB LTE: Legal Pot Is The AnswerWed, 08 Apr 2009
Source:Winnipeg Free Press (CN MB) Author:Barth, Russell Area:Manitoba Lines:28 Added:04/09/2009

RE: Canada's forgotten war on drugs (April 6).

The U.S. and its psychotic laws against marijuana are what is causing all of this misery around the world. The rest of the world needs to tell these pushy bullies to grow up and legalize pot so that people can grow their own. Then the demand for Canadian and Mexican pot would disappear, along with the crime and violence associated with it.

But the U.S. doesn't want to end the war on plants because it keeps their privately owned jails full to the brim. It is all a scam.

Manitoba justice officials are not seeking a jail sentence against a medical marijuana crusader found guilty of trafficking pot to several clients across Canada.

Grant Krieger feared he would die behind bars after jurors found him guilty during his high-profile Queen's Bench trial last fall. But the Calgary resident returned to Winnipeg for sentencing Wednesday and learned the Crown agrees he can remain free in the community under a conditional sentence. The judge has reserved her decision until next month.

ST. STEPHEN - Adam Troy Dickerson needs a physician to sign papers to allow him to legally use marijuana to control pain.

His family doctor agreed he fit the criteria under federal law to medically use the otherwise illegal drug, but would not sign the papers as a matter of policy, duty counsel Joel Hansen told provincial court Judge David Walker this week.

At an earlier court appearance Dickerson, 27, of Elmsville, pleaded guilty to producing marijuana.

Walker adjourned sentencing to allow Dickerson to follow Hansen's advice to find out if he could qualify to legally use marijuana medically. The judge adjourned sentencing to May 19 to allow Dickerson to try to find another doctor to sign the papers.

7 CN NS: PUB LTE: War On Drugs Fuels Crime, Says ExpertThu, 09 Apr 2009
Source:Annapolis County Spectator; The (CN NS) Author:Sharpe, Robert Area:Nova Scotia Lines:45 Added:04/09/2009

Dear Editor:

Your April 2 editorial made the common mistake of confusing drug-related crime with prohibition-related crime. Attempts to limit the supply of illegal drugs while demand remains constant only increase the profitability of drug trafficking. For addictive drugs like heroin, a spike in street prices leads desperate addicts to increase criminal activity to feed desperate habits. The drug war doesn't fight crime, it fuels crime.

The good news is that Canada has already adopted many of the common sense harm reduction interventions first pioneered in Europe. The bad news is Canada's southern neighbor continues to use its superpower status to export a dangerous moral crusade around the globe. The United States provides tragic examples of anti-drug strategies that are best avoided.

'If Canada was under attack," former Vancouver police chief Bob Stewart demanded in February, "would our armed forces be under one commander?"

Vancouver is not at war. But residents of the city and its surrounding area may well feel under siege. This past Saturday, hours after police had announced charges against members of the Red Scorpions gang in the 2007 murder of six people in Surrey (including two innocent bystanders), a man was killed in East Vancouver in what police called a "targeted shooting." There have been about 50 gang-related shootings in the Lower Mainland since January, 18 of them fatal. For many, the killing of a jogger in a park may have been the last straw.

Life is about to become a little more difficult for those who think it is a good idea to drive after smoking pot in Saugeen Shores.

Constable Chris Shaidle of the Saugeen Shores Police Service has recently received his certification as a Drug Recognition Expert through the Ontario Police College after completing a three-week course of both in-class and hands-on learning.

Under Bill C-2, a series of modifications to the Canadian Criminal Code which came into effect July 2 of last year, police officers at a traffic stop can demand a driver submit to drug testing if they suspect impairment. Shaidle said the grounds for suspicion are nearly identical to suspicion of drunk driving.

Mr. Jimmy Cox,

Here are some of the fallacies with the things you had to say.

The first issue is you started out saying "drugs," but you really only meant marijuana the whole time. I've never heard anyone claim all drugs should be legal, and if you have, then it is from a small population that won't ever really have a noteworthy backing.

You then go on to talk about the issue of making drugs more available, and this leading to increased use. Although this argument sounds reasonable, it ignores reality. When I was in high school, it was considerably easier to get marijuana than alcohol. The fact that it's always illegal to acquire sets up the system to get it to you illegally, whereas alcohol requires you to ask someone to break the law for you. You cannot just pretend the broken system works.
