1 CN BC: PUB LTE: 4/20 Garbage Was No IssueFri, 29 Apr 2016

As one of the organizers of the 4/20 Vancouver rally, I object to the unfair portrayal of the garbage cleanup after the event. Every year, volunteers clean up trash. After everyone is gone, we do one last sweep and leave a central pile that the city picks up.

Park board chairwoman Sarah Kirkby-Yung was so eager to prove that some kind of damage had been done, that pickup was delayed for a news conference in front of our centralized mound of trash.

If a garbage pile is the biggest problem after 50,000 people gathered, it shows 4/20 Vancouver was a great success.

Toronto planning crackdown amid retail marijuana 'free-for-all'

The Queens of Cannabis owners wanted their bright and airy Bloor St. W. shop to have a "healing atmosphere" distinct from dozens of other marijuana dispensaries springing up, almost daily, across Toronto.

"We wanted it to be opening, friendly, welcoming. We wanted to take the stigma away from medical marijuana," says co-owner Brandy Zurborg, a government tax auditor turned pot entrepreneur.

Two glass cabinets display tiny jars filled with strains such as Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies and Blueberry, along with an array of chemical- and preservative-free medical pot products.

3Canada: Mother Fights To Give Ill Child Pot OilMon, 02 May 2016

Motivated by love and desperation, an area mother is fighting an uphill battle to treat her daughter's chronic illness with a special cannabis oil.

The establishment, predictably, is against her: the doctors aren't keen; the child-welfare authorities aren't amused; her ex-husband, the child's father, called the cops.

Still, she soldiers on, with the dedication a mother feels deepest, determined to alleviate her child's chronic respiratory condition.

"I'm trying my damnedest to help my daughter and to fight for other parents who just want to help their kids," she told the Citizen. "Nothing else has ever worked."

Police Have Challenge Ahead With Legal Weed and Impaired Driving

While recreational marijuana use is on the brink of being legalized in Canada, driving while high isn't, said a Colorado state trooper speaking to local law enforcement about how to curb drivers impaired by drugs.

"You are legalizing the consumption of marijuana; you are not legalizing driving impaired," said Lt.-Col. Kevin Eldridge after delivering a seminar to local law enforcement at the eighth International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety April 25 at the Shaw Conference Centre.

The City of Vancouver began cracking down on unlicensed medical marijuana shops over the weekend, but owners say they're still committed to keeping their doors open.

Prominent pot activist Jodie Emery said at least half a dozen dispensaries were issued $250 fines on the weekend, the first weekend inspectors enforced regulations that the city put into place last year.

Emery said Saturday she'd talked to two businesses and they remained open. "They're not going to deny accessibility to their patients," Emery said.

Vancouver Shops That Do Not Meet Municipal Requirements for Licensing Vow to Fight Bylaw Tickets 'All the Way to the Courts'

Marijuana advocates are calling on the City of Vancouver to deescalate what some see as a new phase of the war on drugs, as bylaw officers visited dispensaries on the weekend to start handing out $250 tickets to more than 100 unlicensed businesses.

Instead of facing police raids, as they might have in years past, the pot shops were handed fines for being out of compliance with zoning regulations brought in specifically to control Vancouver's large number of outlets.

Re: Why Do Vancouver Potheads Get A Free Pass?, letter to the editor, April 22.

Marijuana is effectively legal in Vancouver because the people who live there want it to be so and don't see the need to wait for permission from someone in Ottawa. Rather than call for prosecution of pot stores, perhaps letter-writer Gordon Akum could ask why possession of pot in Toronto results in criminal charges. After all, the vast majority of Canadians support either decriminalization or legalization of cannabis. It's time the government caught up with the people.

Maple Ridge to Seek Injunction Like Abbotsford

Maple Ridge is following Abbotsford's lead and seeking a court injunction to shut down one of the three medicinal marijuana stores in the city.

Friday, Maple Ridge noted that a Supreme Court ruling found Weeds Glass and Gifts in Abbotsfordviolated a city bylaw by not securing a business licence before opening.

"Maple Ridge is pursuing an injunction in the B.C. Supreme Court to shut down a similar Weeds Glass and Gifts store operation in Maple Ridge," said a news release Thursday.
