MATTAWAN -- The Antwerp Township Board of Trustees has approved a medical marijuana ordinance within residential and agricultural districts.

"You can't have it in commercial zones," Clerk Heather Mitchell said.

Clinics have to be at least 1,000 feet outside of school zones.

The ordinance had been approved both by the township and county planning commissions and is similar to most other such ordinance, according to Mitchell.

One difference is in the number of people that can be customers at once. "There can only be one person that is picking up the medical marijuana at a time," Mitchell said.

LAWTON -- The Lawton Village Council unanimously adopted an ordinance Tuesday that regulates medical marijuana within the village.

Medical marijuana will be allowed, but the ordinance limits it to registered qualified patients and registered primary caregivers. Caregivers must register with the Lawton Police Department.

The committee had worked on following the Michigan's medical marijuana law, which says such businesses can't be near schools or in store fronts. Also, marijuana couldn't be used in a public place.

"We've been very careful," attorney John McNeil told the council.

MATTAWAN - The Mattawan Village Council has asked its planning commission to modify the village's zoning ordinance to ban the manufacture or distribution of medical marijuana.

The council's decision came after a discussion in which attorney Scott Graham detailed potential responses to the voter-approved law allowing medical use of marijuana in Michigan in beginning in April 2009. Complicating the issue for municipalities, said Graham, is that federal law still forbids it.

The city of Livonia banned medical marijuana by adding the sentence to its regulations "uses for enterprises or purposes that are contrary to federal, state or local laws or ordinances are prohibited."
