Students in Burnaby need an anonymous hotline to protect them from drug dealers and the drug trade, say Team Burnaby trustee candidates.

The seven-member school board slate made that announcement earlier this week, saying that crime in the district is affecting students.

"Crime is an education issue the incumbents haven't acknowledged," said candidate Rich Baerg in the original announcement. "Kids have to have safe places to learn and a feeling of overall security. ... Kids need no longer be intimidated by the drug dealers who now frequent our schools."

Most in the public are aware of the growing crystal meth crisis. What is not known is what to do about this drug with the worst combination of attributes: easy to make, cheap to sell, simple to disguise, highly potent and very addictive.

The Northern Health Authority's drug prevention coordinator Andrew Burton has been at the forefront of a series of forums on the subject. The results are back from the most recent one, a forum among community leaders in health, education, youth services and government. This forum, built on the information that came out of previous meetings, was aimed at identifying solutions.

3 CN ON: OPED: In Quebec, Cocaine's OK, Margarine Is NotTue, 15 Nov 2005

We have an interesting approach to the law in Quebec.

The balloting doesn't end until tonight but it looks as if the Parti Quebecois is about to elect as its leader and, the way the polls are running these days, Quebec's next premier, a 39-year-old, Andre Boisclair, who admits to having used cocaine as recently as seven years ago, while he was a cabinet minister in Lucien Bouchard's government.

Now, the use of cocaine was at the time and still is illegal. People presumably are being incarcerated for it even as you read this. They're certainly being incarcerated for selling cocaine. (That's always been a puzzle: If buying marijuana, say, is no longer a crime, why should selling marijuana be one?) But, if anything, the revelation of Mr. Boisclair's drug use actually seemed to help his campaign. In the short run, at least, he seemed a victim of the boisterous press scrum at which he first addressed his former habits.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than 58 pounds of methamphetamine, 18 pounds of cocaine and 100 pounds of marijuana during the weekend at ports of entry in Nogales, Ariz.

On Friday, officers at the Mariposa Port of Entry seized more than 32 pounds of meth from a 20-year-old Nogales, Sonora, man as he tried to smuggle the drugs across in a 1989 Ford van, according to a news release from Customs and Border Protection. The van was searched after a narcotics dog named Max alerted officers. The 20 packages of meth were discovered hidden inside the walls of the van. The driver was arrested.

Pat McWilliams thinks his county is getting a handle on methamphetamine, but he's not ready to celebrate.

Henderson County, Texas, logged 19 meth-related arrests and raided one meth lab during August. A year ago, McWilliams figures, the county would have uncovered "probably four or five labs" per month.

McWilliams, a spokesman for the Henderson County Sheriff's Department in Athens, said enforcement pressure and tougher state laws are helping agencies such as his deal with the meth problem.

Case Details 'Shocking, Violent And Downright Ruthless' Crimes

A Rochester man plotted and executed a series of frenzied robberies of drug houses, federal prosecutors allege.

In a trial in U.S. District Court, prosecutors contend that Thomas "T-Real" Lofton, 35, was the mastermind behind home invasion robberies in 2002 and 2003. In a closing argument Monday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Gregory painted the robberies as "nothing short of shocking, violent and downright ruthless."

The case, which included seven days of testimony, marks the second time that federal authorities in Rochester have used a federal statute called the Hobbs Act to try to stymie drug-related violence.

A trio of medical marijuana advocates is suing the City of Vancouver for $400,000 after police raided a federally licensed indoor grow operation set up in the basement of a rented Vancouver home.

"It's surprising with all this talk of liberal policies in Vancouver - -- the safe injection sites, legal brothels and so forth -- that something that is legal, that is authorized by Health Canada remains taboo," said Michael Maniotis, one of three men who filed the lawsuit against the city in B.C. Supreme Court.

Prisons - Re: "Tattoo parlours now a federal prison perk," Nov. 11.

I attended the Remembrance Day service at the Museum of the Regiments and was quite moved, not only by the service, but also by the size of the crowd of all ages that came to honour the men and women who gave their lives to ensure our freedom.

Then, I came home to learn from the paper that they died so convicted drug dealers, rapists and murderers could be provided free needles to shoot up illegal drugs while in prison. I can just imagine the aura of futility and discouragement that must rest among the crosses, row on row, in Flanders' fields.

FALL RIVER -- At the urging of Mayor Edward M. Lambert Jr., the School Committee directed Superintendent Nicholas A. Fischer to recommend a policy that will direct the School Department on how to handle issues of substance abuse within the district.

Lambert, who serves as the committee chairman, called for the move following the revelation last week that former Slade School Principal Frederick L. Cippolini admitted to police in October that he was a habitual crack cocaine user. Since his admission, Cippolini has been placed on leave with pay and is scheduled to retire in June.
