A heavy police presence and a dark gray sky threatening to pour more rain upon already drenched downtown New York City streets did not keep thousands of young people from standing shoulder to shoulder for nearly 3 blocks to peacefully express their anger on June 4, demanding a repeal of the Rockefeller Drug Laws.

"The Countdown for Fairness" event was organized by Randy Credico and Anthony Papa of the Mothers of the New York Disappeared, Russell Simmons and Bill Gibson from the Hip Hop Summit Action Network, Bob Gangi of Drop the Rock, Dr. Ben Chavis, and Andrew Cuomo. Speakers during the 4 hour event along a busy NYC street right alongside City Hall included Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, Rev. Al Sharpton, Sean Puffy Combs, Mariah Carry, Fifty Cent and Busta Rhymes, Donna Leiberman of the NYCLU, Shawn Heller, HT Freedom Fighter of the year for 2002 and head of the national Students for Sensible Drug Policy, along with many other politicians, celebrities and musicians, including Millie Rockefeller, granddaughter of former Governor Nelson Rockefeller, the namesake who first signed the repressive NY drug laws into being.

2 UK: Grim Plight Of Drug Users' ChildrenFri, 06 Jun 2003

Up to 350,000 children in Britain have at least one parent who is a problem drug user, government advisers said yesterday.

Many are suffering "hidden harm" from poverty, abuse, poor health and disrupted education. The children often fend for themselves and look after their parents and siblings.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), conducted this first official attempt to quantify the offspring of addicts. It hopes the results, which paint a "depressing but not unexpected" picture, will jolt mainstream health, social, education and child protection services, as well as specialist drug services.

View From The Left

I finished last week's column (a listing of negative events in America during my lifetime) with the suggestion that some day I might write a similar column about positive events.

As a matter of fact, many wonderful things have happened here since I was born. So, by popular demand, I'll list a few of them. And, just offhand, I'm guessing my "positive" list won't be the same as yours.

* Prohibition repealed.

* Social Security enacted.

4 US MA: PUB LTE: Canadian Marijuana Law Is Flawed As Now WrittenSat, 07 Jun 2003
Source:Union-News (MA) Author:Block, David Area:Massachusetts Lines:25 Added:06/10/2003

A proposed marijuana law in Canada is not very well thought-out. The law states that you can, and will, be prosecuted if you have a small amount of marijuana.

The proposal considers a small amount being 15 grams, or half an ounce.

I think it should be all or nothing.

In other words, I think that if the Canadian government is going to propose a law concerning the possession of marijuana, they should either legalize it, or make it all illegal.

The proposal isn't a bad one, but it should be rephrased or better constructed.

A Judge Convicts An Advocate For Medical Cannabis

Fifteen months after Robert Gray was busted for manufacture, possession and distribution of marijuana, the director of the Medical Cannabis Resource Center in Salem finally had his day in court Monday.

Instead of the all-out fight for principle's sake that Gray swore he would wage, the 38-year-old medical marijuana card holder and provider waived his right to a jury trial.

Backed by more than two dozen supporters, wearing white T-shirts with a marijuana plant over a red cross, Gray and girlfriend Linda Johnson both agreed to a stipulated fact trials by Marion County Judge Joseph Ochoa.

6 US FL: OPED: Drug Treatment Should Be Just A Click AwayTue, 10 Jun 2003

The level of alcohol and drug dependency in this country is at crisis levels. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, of the 27 million Americans who now are abusing illegal drugs or alcohol regularly, 16 million need treatment, but only 3 million get it. The future looks equally bleak if we do not take action: Nearly one-fourth of eighth-graders say they have been drunk; and in addition to their alcohol use, 10.8 percent of youth aged 12-17 used illegal drugs last year.

Four Bradenton Deaths Blamed On Drug Abuse

BRADENTON - Worries that poisoned or super-potent heroin may be for sale on local streets surfaced anew after a 23-year-old man became the latest in a growing list of deaths linked to the drug here.

Michael Tippery died after a friend found him "messed up on heroin" late Saturday, the fourth such death in Manatee County in the past two weeks and 10th already this year, police say.

"Using narcotics is foolish to begin with," said Bradenton Police Department Major Bill Tokajer, "but now you have an added issue that it may be tainted or more potent."

An effort to divert federal anti-drug money from local police in states with medical marijuana laws was thwarted this week by a House committee, which also curtailed other proposed expansions of the White House drug czar's power.

The House Government Reform Committee on Thursday sliced several key provisions out of the bill - carried by House Republicans and backed by the Bush administration - reauthorizing the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy for the next five years. The bill still needs approval by the full House and by the Senate.

NEW HAVEN - Criminal justice reform advocates are gearing up to challenge wrongful convictions in the state, taking inspiration from the exoneration of more than 100 death-row inmates nationwide who have been cleared by DNA evidence.

At a conference Saturday, about 60 people gathered at St. Paul & St. James Episcopal Church to discuss ways to tackle police and prosecutorial misconduct, eyewitness misidentification of suspects and prosecuting those with mental illness.

The event was sponsored by People Against Injustice, the Green Party of New Haven County, Efficacy, A Better Way Foundation, Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty and Interfaith Cooperative Ministries.
