Re: "Follow VA lead on medical marijuana," Aug. 1:

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' long overdue acknowledgement of marijuana's medical efficacy has important implications for troops returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. In response to findings that soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are successfully self-medicating with marijuana, Israel is conducting clinical trials on the use of marijuana derivatives to treat PTSD.

A groundbreaking study of 4,117 patients conducted by California physician Thomas O'Connell found that marijuana is widely used as an anti-anxiety/antidepressant agent, performing as well or better than many currently available prescription drugs prescribed for the same symptoms.

Re: "Mexico's Sounds of Silence - No news is bad news when media self-censors," Thursday Editorials. The Dallas Morning News almost got it right.

The ghastly violence in Mexico is not about drugs.

It's about money, and we can stop it. Drug cartels don't have a valuable product.

The drugs they sell are common and plentiful.

All they have and all they are fighting for is an illegal distribution system. There were no beheadings during most of the history of Mexico and the U.S., when any man, woman or child could buy these products easily, cheaply and legally.

Reading about the death and funeral of Chandler police detective Carlos Ledesma makes me both sad and mad. (News of Chandler detective's death touches town in Iowa" (8-4-10). The Chandler Police Department should not be in the business of creating crime. Those responsible for putting Detective Carlos Ledesma's life in jeopardy should be fired. This includes everyone from the Chief of Police on down. I want law enforcement to protect me from those who want to harm me against my will. Not marijuana buyers.

Our Mission Is to Stimulate Discussion; a Medical Marijuana Opinion Certainly Did

The statement that appears below this and every other editorial in this newspaper reads, "The Mail Tribune offers its opinion pages to stimulate discussion and understanding of issues important to our community." Judging by the protesters who appeared in front of our building Wednesday, it appears we have succeeded.

The protesters were upset about an editorial we reprinted July 31 from The Oregonian regarding an initiative on the November ballot that would change the way medical marijuana is dispensed to those who are qualified to receive it.

Illegal Marijuana Plantations on Government Lands Are Expanding, Putting Forest Users at Risk, Say Southern Oregon Law Officers

As the helicopter raced over the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Saturday morning, the pilot explained his rationale for flying low and fast.

"We try to fly about 300 feet above the ground," said the Jackson County Sheriff's deputy. "It's better than at high altitude. This way you are only a target for a few seconds."

Folks who grow marijuana on federal forestland have been known to take shots at unwanted visitors, he will tell you.

6 US CA: In SLO County, Debate Is Over DispensariesSun, 08 Aug 2010

The history of medical marijuana in San Luis Obispo County has been characterized by support and opposition to dispensaries.

In 2006, San Luis Obispo County became the 21st in California to issue cards to qualified medical marijuana patients and their primary caregivers.

In 2007, the Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance allowing medical marijuana dispensaries. The ordinance stipulates that dispensaries cannot be in a downtown business area or within 1,000 feet of any school, library, playground, park or youth recreation area.

7 US: LTE: Maybe More Drug Testing Would HelpSat, 07 Aug 2010

The article about drug testing employees for cannabis ( "At Work, a Drug Dilemma," Personal Journal, Aug. 3 ) has me thinking of the time Rep. Patrick Kennedy got into a car accident and we discovered he was addicted to pain killers. The article reminds us that to work a cash register at Wal-Mart you have to pass a drug test. Mr. Kennedy's case reminds us that congressmen do not have to pass a drug test. It just goes to show which job requires sober deliberation.

Of the 10 statewide ballot measures facing voters on Nov. 2, the most controversial is Proposition 19, which asks voters to decide whether the sale of marijuana should be legalized for general use. Prop. 19 would go beyond the current law that legalizes marijuana for medical use.

Prop. 19 would allow people who are at least 21 years old to "possess, cultivate or transport marijuana for personal use."

It would permit local governments to regulate and tax commercial production, distribution and sales of marijuana for people 21 and older.

9US CA: Medicinal Marijuana Show In San Jose Draws ThousandsSat, 07 Aug 2010

There was one thing you couldn't do at the HempCon Medical Marijuana Show in San Jose on Saturday: smoke marijuana.

But you could step across the street away from the convention center's South Hall, nestle back in the shade and light up -- as dozens of devotees did.

The event was one of those modern-day meetings of the minds where medical marijuana users, cannabis growers, paraphernalia peddlers and even insurance companies that specialize in coverage for the marijuana industry rubbed shoulders to help promote medical marijuana -- and it was all legal.

10 US: 'Bhang' To Trigger New Patent War?Mon, 09 Aug 2010

WASHINGTON: An ancient Indian high could soon get 'bhang-alored' to the United States if the efforts of an American confectioner prove successful.

Scott J Van Rixel, a New Mexico chocalatier, has applied to trademark a product called "Bhang: The Original Cannabis Chocolate."

Rixel's highly-anticipated confection, coming amid a rousing debate about legalizing marijuana in the US, is laced with a form of cannabis.

If he gets his first creation through the system, Rixel says he plans to start selling at least two more types of 'Bhang' chocolates in the US and may even consider expanding the line to India. He has already incorporated a company named 'Bhang Chocolate Company Inc' for this new venture, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Things got a little dicey Saturday in Juarez when heavily armed federal police agents squared off against each other -- their loyalties divided because of the violence that has gripped the city and alleged corruption in their ranks.

One group of about 150 armed federal agents accused their commanders of corruption and grabbed one assistant commander, handcuffed him, pulled his hair and slugged him.

Agents wearing ski masks told television reporters that their commanders are corrupt, are taking their money and are putting them in danger in the war between the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels.
