Canada's Health Minister Rona Ambrose said on Thursday that she is "outraged" by the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling on how users of medical marijuana can use it - they will not be restricted to just smoking it.

Ambrose is also vowing to fight the SCOC's "normalization" of pot use in Canada.

It is a strange response to the unanimous SCOC ruling.

First of all, the ruling has nothing to do with the normalization of pot use; it just removes restrictions for those medical users of the drug - a good thing. There is some irony in the fact that some Canadian users were concerned about the harmful effects of smoking the drug, which can be consumed in numerous other ways, including baking into products such as muffins or cookies, brewing as a tea or even taking as a pill.

Munch away, medical pot users.

The Supreme Court of Canada says those entitled to use marijuana for medical reasons can now have edible forms of the drug, such as pot brownies or cookies, not just dried leaf to smoke.

The law had limited licensed users to only using dried marijuana and any other form could lead to criminal charges.

Owen Smith was charged in 2009 with possession and trafficking marijuana while he was the head of the Cannabis Buyers Club of Canada.

Munch away, medical pot users. The Supreme Court of Canada says you can now consume edible forms of the drug, such as pot brownies, cookies, infused cooking oils and teas, not just dried marijuana leaf to smoke.

Thursday's decision came a day after London's first specialized cannabis clinic opened.

The high court's ruling could open medical marijuana to a wider group of users who don't want to smoke or use a vaporizer to inhale the narcotic, said Ronan Levy, a lawyer and director of Canadian Cannabis Clinics, whose London operation opened this week.

"SPECIAL" brownies could soon be the running special at a Winnipeg bakery near you.

After a unanimous Supreme Court decision Thursday ruled in favour of legalizing the production of edible medical marijuana products such as pastries, cooking oils and teas, Winnipeg tokers celebrated with cannabis-infused beverages and pastries at Vapes Off Main on Albert Street.

The 18-plus smoking lounge licensed for medical marijuana users has high hopes for new programming possibilities, thanks to the new rules. It will start selling baked goods and provide cooking classes now that the grey area surrounding edibles is gone.

Despite dire predictions to the contrary, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has led Canada in a mostly centrist direction during the nine years he has stood at its helm.

In many ways this has served the country well and brought it together during some difficult times. But every so often, the Conservative government disappoints even those who are inclined to view it favourably by digging in its heels and holding a rigidly doctrinaire position on the smallest of issues. This happened twice in the past week. First, the government said it would be introducing legislation to ban veils that cover the face, such as the niqab, during citizenship ceremonies. This is in direct defiance of a Federal Court ruling against a government policy that had required the covering be removed as the oath was taken.

The Supreme Court of Canada is perhaps one of the most misunderstood bodies in this country's system of laws and how they are made. Misunderstood particularly, it seems, by our very own federal government.

The Supremes are ultimate defenders of the Constitution and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Their rulings are based primarily on those documents as well as a fundamental understanding of law as it ought to apply in this country.

While the federal government has rights to pass legislation, they are still bound by the statutes in the Charter. If they are seen to be overstepping those boundaries, the Supremes are well within their jurisdiction to virtually strike down these laws.

10Canada: Health Canada Slams Pot PaymentsSat, 13 Jun 2015

Government-licensed medical marijuana producers should avoid making "inappropriate" payments to individuals or groups, Health Canada has warned just days after allegations surfaced that some doctors are getting kickbacks from the companies.

As producers battle among themselves over who holds the moral high ground in the fledgling cannabis industry, the government is insisting that all the companies act with integrity.

"Health Canada expects licensed producers =C2=85 to be honest and ethical

in how they conduct their business and act professionally and in good faith," the department declares in a bulletin issued earlier this week.
