A recent nationwide survey concluded that Arizona is the seventh dumbest of the 50 states. Six states are dumber than we are. Forty- three states are smarter.

The people dumber than we are live (in descending order of intelligence) in Hawaii, Nevada, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and New Mexico. The folks who aren't as dumb as we are live everywhere else.

Question. Do we really need a national survey to tell us what's already abundantly apparent? No. In fact, we need look no further than Mesa and the proponents of Proposition 203 to make Arizona's convincing case for stupidity.

Chief Says Property Room Was Mess, Much More May Be Missing

DETROIT -- The indictment of nine people on charges of stealing at least 222 pounds of cocaine from the Detroit Police Department's evidence room is the first step in a wider investigation to account for weapons and cash that could be missing from the storage area, Chief Jerry A. Oliver Sr. said Wednesday.

"There are whole lockers and vaults of weapons that have to be inventoried and accounted for," Oliver said. "We have huge amounts of money, cash, that must be inventoried and we are in the process of doing that. There are hundreds of property envelopes filled with cash. The war on drugs keeps getting bigger and meaner. Just when you think the tide is beginning to turn, someone in charge takes it a step further. What happened in California last month could happen in Washington soon.

On Sept. 5, Drug Enforcement Administration agents armed with automatic weapons raided a hospice on the outskirts of Santa Cruz because it grew and used marijuana for its patients, most of them terminally ill.

The founder and director, Valerie Corral, who uses marijuana herself to control debilitating seizures as a result of head trauma following a 1973 car accident, was taken away in her pajamas. Suzanne Pfeil, a paraplegic patient suffering from postpolio syndrome, was told to stand up and then handcuffed in bed when she could not. All the plants were destroyed.

For starters, let's agree that few things are more heartbreaking for a parent than having a child run afoul of the law.

Most of us can only imagine what anguish Jeb and Columba Bush must be enduring in watching daughter Noelle struggle to come to grips with her drug dependency.
