Grocery pharmacies, Shoppers Drug Mart 'effective at managing controlled substances,' Galen Weston Jr. said

Galen G. Weston wants in on the medical marijuana business.

Weston, the head of the country's largest drugstore and grocery chain, said Thursday that pharmacists are well-positioned to dispense the drug in a safe manner.

"We're an industry that is extremely effective at managing controlled substances," said Weston, Loblaw's president and executive chairman, following the company's annual general meeting Thursday.

"It gives pharmacists the opportunity to work directly in real time with patients as opposed to doing it through the mail, working on their doses and making sure it actually has the therapeutic effect that it is intended to have."

Canada's largest publicly traded producer of medical marijuana is making the case for the quality of weed made by large-scale manufacturers compared to homegrown bud. The difference is the same as drinking home brew versus a good bottle of wine, Bruce Linton, chairman and CEO of Canopy Growth Corp. said Thursday during a call with analysts.

"People say: 'It's just soil, it grows easily,' " he said. "No, no, no - - quality and consistency doesn't happen without chemicals unless you're running a proper facility."

SOME USERS worry that privatizing Canada's medical cannabis industry will come at too high a cost

Mark Gobuty isn't raising cattle or cultivating corn on his farm north of Toronto - he's growing medical marijuana.

His company, the Peace Naturals Project, is one of the first to be approved by Health Canada to commercially produce and distribute dried cannabis before changes next spring to Ottawa's marijuana medical access program.

Starting April 1, the program that began in 2001 will no longer require medicinal marijuana users to buy their medication through Ottawa's one approved supplier, grow their own plants or designate someone to be their personal grower. Instead, users will be restricted to buying their cannabis from a list of approved suppliers.

Just Reducing Needle Sharing Could Save $14 Million In 10 Years, Research Suggests

Vancouver's supervised drug injection site can save the Canadian health-care system as much as $20 million and substantially increase a population's lifespan over a 10-year period, according to a study to be published today in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

The study, which used a computer simulation, measured the projected impacts on Vancouver in the next decade with and without its controversial Insite facility, the only such facility in Canada. It found that, when the only impact of such a facility is assumed to be a reduction in the prevalence of needle-sharing by drug users, there is a projected net saving of nearly $14 million over 10 years.

Police are worried that 80 guns stolen in a break-in at a heavily secured gun shop in Vernon, B. C., may be used to fuel the drug trade.

The thieves gained access to the two-storey shop through a skylight. Then they deactivated the alarm system by snipping wires and cut a hole through the ceiling of the shop.
