Fatal drug overdoses in the North Island kept pace with the Lower Mainland in 2016, with fentanyl-laced narcotics to blame for two thirds of the deaths.

As of the end of November, the B.C. Coroner's Service documented 755 illicit drug overdoses in 2016 across the province.

One hundred and thirty-nine of those deaths took place on Vancouver Island.

"The year before, we had 60," said Island medical health officer Dr. Charmaine Enns, who is calling for more early intervention and treatment programs and services to combat the crisis.

Re Province must 'step up' on injection sites, Jan. 9 I do not understand why the city is being pressured to establish safe injection sites for drug addicts.

Will they then be expected to set up safe drinking sites for alcoholics?

Helping addicts heal is noble, but let's not ignore safety concerns

From the look of things, Ottawa is going to get a supervised-injection site whether we like it or not. With a supportive federal government planning legislation to speed up the process for injection sites and the Ontario government backing a Sandy Hill proposal - in spite of the objections of Mayor Jim Watson and police Chief Charles Bordeleau - the die is cast.

A supervised-injection site may, or may not, be what the city needs, but we should not let the federal and provincial governments drive the issue. The city's medical officer of health, Dr. Isra Levy, once noted that Ottawa may actually need more than one site, and if this is where we are headed, we owe ourselves a full debate on the merits and potential risks associated with such a controversial project.

Mayor Jim Watson may be willing to bow out of the official debate over supervised injection sites, but his police chief, laudably, isn't.

In a letter this week to the Sandy Hill Community Centre, Chief Charles Bordeleau raises several concerns about security if a legal drug injection operation is opened at that location. He calls the centre's plans so far "inadequate."

Bordeleau warns "if stronger mitigation plans are not put in place, we expect to see an increase in calls to police and other front line responders like paramedics."

Health authority applying for an exemption from Health Canada to operate the site; the process could happen right away or take years

A mobile supervised injection site is in the works for Kelowna, Interior Health announced Friday afternoon. IH will be applying for an exemption from Health Canada to operate the site. "In order for people to be able to use drugs under supervision, we need an exemption," said Dr. Silvina Mema, medical health officer with IH. "Health Canada needs to clear us to be able to do that."

6 CN BC: 'Incredible Benefit' To Overdose-Prevention Sites, AskFri, 13 Jan 2017

There's been an "incredible benefit" to last month's creation of overdose-prevention sites in Kamloops, said Bob Hughes, something that goes beyond ensuring drug users are safe - many of them are talking with the medical staff there about some of the reasons they are in their lifestyles.

The executive director of ASK Wellness Centre said that as staff hand out safe drug-use equipment - a program the agency has done for years to help combat infections and other diseases associated with drug use - they're also looking for opportunities to ask clients about housing needs other health issues and whether they're ready to try rehabilitation programs or other services that might see them make changes in the way they live.

Editor:

I think the development of more powerful street drugs (i.e. fentanyl, meth, etc.) of course is driven by the profits available for cheaper more powerful lethal drugs. I think it may be time to look at legalizing drugs so we can better control them.

Drugs at one time in world history were legal and the use of them was far less widespread. Coca Cola at one time contained cocaine (hence the name coke).

The consumption of alcohol during Prohibition was far more widespread than when it was legal. There were many deaths from badly produced by unregulated producers of alcohol or antifreeze-laced cocktails. The growth of gangland crime and political corruption was rampant.

8 CN BC: Plan For Safe-consumption Sites Set To Take Next Step ThisFri, 13 Jan 2017
Source:Kamloops This Week (CN BC) Author:Bass, Dale Area:British Columbia Lines:71 Added:01/16/2017

Safe-consumption drug sites will move a step closer to creation in Kamloops this month as agencies and other organizations prepare to meet with Interior Health Authority administrators in the city.

The meeting comes at the conclusion of a consultation period that included politicians, front-line workers, emergency personnel, police and others who deal with the realities of addiction.

The public also had the opportunity to express their views online.

Last fall, IHA medical officer of health Dr. Silvina Mema discussed the plan to create at least one such site in the city. Health Minister Terry Lake, however, recommended a mobile site be created to provide care on both sides of the river.

A new marijuana dispensary will soon be joining the two permitted operations in Penticton.

"We've retained legal counsel and we are going to open our doors," said Robert Jaenicke, manager of the Okanagan Cannabis Solutions Society outlets. He plans to open his doors on Jan. 16, even without a permit from the city.

Unlike Green Essence and Okanagan Cannabinoid Therapy, Jaenicke wasn't approved for a temporary use permit at Penticton city council's Dec. 6 meeting. Jaenicke said that decision wasn't fair or, in his opinion, legal.

It was budget feedback night for the public at Chilliwack city hall Tuesday.

Some of the exact same issues and questions came up on the council floor as last year's information hearing on the financial plan.

Once again there was a call for a zero tax increase, and once again there were calls for city council to support Hope River slough restoration in the budget.

Several speakers said they were worried about high tax bills in the face of hugely increased property assessments. One person asked for a lower tax increase.
