About 10 Student for Sensible Drug Policy members gathered in the student union on Monday evening to discuss the war on drugs and their success in helping thousands of students with marijuana convictions obtain financial aid.

Students for Sensible Drug Policy is an international grass-roots network of students who are concerned about the impact drug abuse has on our communities, according to its site's mission statement - it has been active on SJSU's campus since Spring '09.

The group's goal is to spread awareness on the failed drug policies in the U.S., and to help students and minorities, who are affected by drug policies, said Alexander Woon, founder of the SJSU chapter.

Pot propaganda panned, Letters, Jan 21.

This letter posited that our local MP Randy White was one of the most dangerous men in Canada because of his opposition to legalizing marijuana. His analysis is ludicrous, but does point to the mindset of the many overzealous pot proponents.

The most common argument for legalization is that it would put organized criminals out of business and at the same time would generate gobs of profit for the government. This profit could then be used to develop programs to teach our young people not to smoke it.

Editor, The News:

A few days ago the Vancouver Sun carried a feature article on the Hells Angels' plan to open a nightclub in Gastown.

The City of Vancouver says it has no power to stop them if it is a legitimate business.

To call any business owned by the Hells Angels "legitimate" is an insult to our collective intelligence.

Those dregs of humanity are even worse than terrorists.

They deal in death and destruction on a daily basis.

There are 6,000 drug addicts in Vancouver alone who commit 80 per cent of auto thefts, burglaries and other crimes to support their drug habits.

4 CN AB: LTE: Smoking In The SenateMon, 07 Oct 2002

Re: "Get off the pot and learn the facts," (Sept. 23). Our irrelevant Senate has awakened from its perpetual snooze to promote legislation that will put marijuana smokes on retail shelves all across Canada. They reason that if marijuana is readily available, people will quit wanting it--just like everyone has quit smoking cigarettes.

Unbelievably, the Senate has determined that marijuana is not addictive, is not a gateway drug and is less hazardous to your health than cigarettes. They claim to have done extensive research, mentioning the Netherlands and Switzerland, whose liberal drug laws have caused huge problems and expenses.

5 CN BC: LTE: Pot Argument Lacking The FactsTue, 24 Sep 2002

The Editor:

Rodney Cockroft is a typical example of those who want to legalize marijuana ['Pot not so bad,' Times Letters, Sept. 17] - long on theory, short on facts.

Cockroft obviously supports the frequently held opinion that because prohibition was a failure, we should learn from our mistakes and legalize marijuana. What a preposterous idea.

If we were to legalize everything that is difficult to control we would eventually have anarchy. While there is some validity to decriminalizing the use of marijuana, we should not lose sight of the fact that this drug is a much more potent product today than it was 20 years ago.

Editor, The News:

I must admit to being somewhat surprised to read an editorial in your paper supporting the legalization of marijuana. I do not think you did much research or gave this subject serious thought.

You do a disservice to your readers by taking up the cause of pot smoking social engineers who call for the legalization of marijuana without presenting any meaningful statistical information to back up their demands.

They are prone to use Holland as an example of a sensible, modern-day solution which, to my way of thinking, is not something we would want for our city.
