With Legalization of Pot a Possibility, Humbolt County Ponders Its Future

In this region renowned for potent marijuana buds, many in Humboldt County long accepted that legalizing the weed was the right thing to do.

Now some folks aren't so sure.

A statewide initiative in November would allow cities to regulate pot possession and cultivation. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) has proposed a broader legalization. Neither is certain to pass.

Yet as medical marijuana has spread and city and state budgets are being slashed, legalized marijuana is becoming more possible than ever. That has some people here thinking twice.

Rights Of Medical Marijuana Users Denied: Owner

The Queen Street East ''compassion club'' raided and picked clean by police last week reopened yesterday, but it was selling only politics, not marijuana.

Neev Tapiero, owner of Cannabis As Living Medicine (CALM), said its current goal is to spread the word about a protest this Sunday outside police headquarters over the government's medical marijuana regulations.

''Health Canada's poorly run program ... results in thousands of people's rights being denied,'' he said.

3US CO: Cannabis Convention Aims to Bogart Itself a Place in HistorySat, 03 Apr 2010

Inside the Colorado Convention Center, a woman in a faded ball cap picks up a glass pipe -- with its swirling shades of blue and elegant design curves -- as if she were an archaeologist beholding a great treasure. Think Indiana Jones, but with marijuana paraphernalia.

"This is freaking sick!" she exclaims. "I think I'm in love. Like, seriously."

Behind the counter, Noah Holland grins. Asked earlier whether anyone ever thought his creations -- hand-blown items that cost as little as $20 or as much as $1,200 -- are too pretty to light, he shrugged off the suggestion.

4 US CA: Crackdown to Target Skid Row Drug DealersThu, 08 Apr 2010

An Injunction Would Zero in on Specific People and Could Extend to John Does

Los Angeles prosecutors on Wednesday announced that they would seek a criminal injunction targeting potentially hundreds of so-called commuter drug dealers who travel to skid row from other parts of the city to sell their goods -- an aggressive new tactic in the city's crackdown on the West Coast's largest drug bazaar.

The proposed injunction, if approved by a judge, would ban the 80 named dealers from skid row and would allow authorities to expand the list by as many as 300 additional names over time. The idea has sparked protests from some homeless advocates and civil liberties activists who say it would give too much power to police and could prevent some people from receiving drug treatment or other services located in skid row. The way to tackle the area's drug problem, they say, is to fund more programs for drug rehabilitation.

5 US CA: PUB LTE: Tax, Regulate Pot BusinessWed, 07 Apr 2010

I am responding to a recent anti-marijuana opinion. Taxing and regulating marijuana would be a good thing.

Teenagers for decades have stated that marijuana is easier to get than alcohol and tobacco. The black market does not ask for IDs. Holland and Portugal have softened their drug laws, and drug use in both of those countries has dropped way below our ours.

Law enforcement has known this for years, but because federal grants give $40 billion a year to stamp out marijuana, they sure want their place at the feeding trough. Law enforcement will fight to keep the money flowing.

A woman who spent months in jail fighting Canada's pot laws has been released after being found guilty of growing and trafficking marijuana.

Edith Noreen Evers, founder of the North Island Compassion Club, was sentenced to time served after spending a total of about five months in pre-trial custody, some of it in hospital, as her case wound its way through the court system.

Evers was arrested in the fall of 2006, after Comox Valley RCMP raided her Black Creek farm and chopped down dozens of marijuana plants that ranged in height from four to seven feet.

A community partnership is underway to help keep Prince Albert clean and safe.

Members of the Safe Needle Prince Albert committee met Thursday to discuss this year's spring cleanup and how to address needle pick up during the cleanup.

"Often it's because of community relationships, community partnerships that it works," said Marlene Allen, nurse manager of the sexual health, HIV, and hepatitis C clinic.

This year's Pitch-In Week, a launch to a community-wide effort of beautifying the city, will kick off in the downtown April 24.

To The Editor:

Re: Northumberland residents help create nation's first medical marijuana expo (Feb. 25).

There is much about this program that the government doesn't talk about, and it has been an ongoing fiasco for almost a decade. Here are some things that Canadians need to know about the medical marijuana program at Health Canada

* The program itself has been ruled unconstitutional by at least four court rulings

- - The program is so scandalously understaffed that there is a 16-week wait for applications to be processed (whereas it only takes a few weeks to get a gun). Simple renewals take 10 weeks.

On March 16, Stephen Harper sat down to a Canadian political first - a prime ministerial YouTube interview. Nearly 200,000 votes were cast for thousands of questions.

Now, considering the medium for this session I think most of us can guess what the top voted question would be concerning, no?

Well, for all you living in Canada's "drug free zones" I'll fill you in: "A majority of Canadians, when polled, say they believe marijuana should be legal for adults, just like alcohol. Why don't you end the war on drugs and focus on violent criminals?"
