But City Isn't Changing Bylaw, Yet

A Kelowna lawyer is urging the City of Pitt Meadows to rethink its bylaw prohibiting the production of medical marijuana within municipal boundaries.

Jennifer Thorne, a criminal defense lawyer, is representing a client who wants to start a medical marijuana facility in Pitt Meadows. Thorne said because of the sensitive nature of the issue, the client wants to remain anonymous.

Thorne sent a letter to Pitt Meadows council on March 23 and says the bylaw is "likely unconstitutional," that it infringes upon certain agricultural rights under the Right To Farm Act.

As the debate around the production and use of medical marijuana continues to smoulder across Canadian communities, the District of Mission is making a plea to the federal government to extinguish the growing number of grow-ops that are taking hold inside its borders.

Mayor Ted Adlem said he's hoping a letter sent to federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq will put pressure on the government to live up to its obligations to monitor and control medical marijuana grow-ups. The letter was published in the Jan. 17, 2013 edition of The Mission Record. In the correspondence, Adlem points out there are an "exceptionally high number" of personal-use and designated production licences for medical marijuana within Mission.

The City of Armstrong is going to ask North Okanagan Shuswap School District for their help to crack down on drug houses in the community.

The municipality is hoping the school district will consider making areas surrounding local schools "drug-free zones" that would give police more clout when dealing with the growing problem of drug houses in the community.

The issue came to light in Armstrong after a pair of concerned citizens approached council looking for help in dealing with what appears to be drug houses in their neighbourhoods.

Pardon the cliche, but it's high-time the federal government resolved the marijuana issue that seems to be clouding the horizon in Vancouver.

For more than 80 years the government has kept the policy of prohibition on the books, forcing one of the most controversial plants known to man into hiding.

Vancouver, and B.C. for that matter, is world renowned for its production of the illegal plant. We also happen to be world renowned for our lax policies on enforcement. The Da Kine Smoke and Beverage shop has been plastered all over the front pages of the Vancouver dailies as it openly flaunts the law, selling small quantities to those who make their way to Commercial Drive. Residential homes in the suburbs are quickly transforming themselves from quiet neighbourhoods into small-scale marijuana factories.

Touring the province in a bus once used by U.S. president Ronald Reagan and wrestling legend and Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, the B.C. Marijuana Party hopes some of its good luck will rub off.

Party leader Brian Taylor and a small entourage made a pit stop in Vernon Saturday before they made their way to Kamloops for the Million Marijuana March.

"It seems ironic that we are on a bus used by Ronald Reagan, since the whole darn war on drugs seem to escalate with him about 20 years ago," said Taylor, the former mayor of Grand Forks from 1997 to 1999.
