Christopher Carlson, a former HMCS Saskatoon petty officer, has been spared a jail sentence for off-duty cocaine use.

But Carlson's military record will mention misconduct and indicate he was dismissed with dishonour from Her Majesty's Service, military judge Col. Mario Dutil said yesterday at the conclusion of Carlson's court martial.

Carlson's rank at the time of his dismissal was also been reduced to leading seaman. He is required to pay a $2,000 fine by the end of the year.

Misinformation for the purpose of perpetuating a lie is wrong. Most of us were told this by our parents. And yet, today we allow government officials to twist the truth to suit their agenda.

Case in point: Marijuana laws. These laws were not created to protect society at large, but rather to protect the interests of those who profit from marijuana's illegality. The feds seem to have the biggest need to see that this plant remains against the law regardless of the fact that individual states and the populace within see it differently.

Robert Hiel was a victim on two counts -- of drug addiction and the fatal injuries that resulted in a manslaughter charge against a Windsor student.

"Yes, he led a troubled life, he had an illness," his sister Louise Farrell said Friday. "It's like a cancer, it's a drug addiction. He made bad choices because of that. But he was also a father of a beautiful 18-year-old daughter who has to read this horrible article, he's a son, he's a brother, he's an uncle."

4US CA: Federal Judge Sentences Plumas Pot GrowersSat, 19 Apr 2008

Another lengthy and emotional hearing on medical marijuana punishment played out Friday in Sacramento federal court, culminating in the sentencing of a Plumas County man to two years in prison and his wife to six months.

Jeffre Sean Sanderson and his wife, Alice Jean Wiegand, were arrested in 2006 on federal marijuana charges.

The couple insisted they grew and used marijuana for medicinal and spiritual purposes. But confronted with the reality that medical necessity is not a defense in federal court, they pleaded guilty in November to manufacturing the drug at their home in the steep, wooded Rush Creek Canyon.

To the editor,

Re: Learning to grow the right stuff

The problem with the Health Canada medical marijuana program is that it was designed specifically to fail. Leave it to the Canadian federal government to screw up something that even stoners can get right.

The reason PPS is having trouble growing good pot is because of Health Canada. They force PPS to grow it to their "standards": standards which have nothing at all to do with high-quality cannabis.

"...the use of therapeutic marijuana remains controversial to some...." Actually, the science on cannabis' efficacy is old and solid, and recent science out of Germany shows how cannabinoids stimulate the body's production of TIMP-1, which helps healthy cells resist cancer invasion.

While many young and old alike in Humboldt County may be partaking today in the annual marijuana celebration of April 20 -- also known as "4/20" -- there is at least one person who won't being joining in.

Her name is Pamela Stoner, the only "Stoner" listed in the 707 area code phone book.

"I joke around that I come from a long line of Stoners," Stoner said, adding that she gets many raised eyebrows and curious glances when her last name is said out loud in a public place. People often try to get a good look at her to see if she's high.

Dear Editor,

What good has the hundreds of billions of U.S. tax dollars that we have paid to foreign governments like Columbia done to ebb the flow of drugs into our country? Nothing; drugs are more powerful and more plentiful than ever before.

Over the past 20 years, 300,000 Columbians have lost their lives due to drug war violence, including four presidential candidates, some 200 court justices, 2,000 police officers and prosecutors, and 150 journalists have been assassinated. In Columbia's municipal elections just a few months ago, 36 candidates for mayor were assassinated and 50 more were kidnapped. Elected officials, judges, police officers and entire military units are corrupted with cash from the drug cartels. The drug war created and continues to fuel civil war in Columbia and many other countries at U.S. taxpayer expense.

An inspector, stationed in Nelson, will be placed in charge of the Nelson, Castlegar, Trail and Grand Forks detachments, says District Commander Don Harrison, head of the RCMP's southeast district in B.C. The four detachments will make up a new Kootenay Boundary police unit.
