HILO -- The Hawaii County Police Commission meeting Tuesday in Hilo was supposed to be about residents commenting on the two candidates seeking to replace retiring Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna.

Instead, many of the people who commented just wanted the commission to be sure whoever it chooses as the next chief abides by the marijuana initiative recently approved by voters.

Deputy Police Chief Harry Kubojiri and retired Police Captain Chadwick "Chad" Fukui are the two candidates the commission is considering as replacements for Mahuna.

HILO -- A complaint was filed Wednesday with the Hawaii County Police Commission against Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna regarding his recent comments about the voter-approved marijuana initiative.

Roger Christie, pastor of the THC Cannabis Ministry in Hilo, said Wednesday he filed the complaint because of comments Mahuna made in two Nov. 7 newspaper articles.

The initiative, which was approved by voters in the Nov. 4 election, made marijuana enforcement the lowest police priority when it's intended for adult personal use.

HILO - Federal funding for the Big Island's marijuana eradication program has been made available, but it's unclear whether the Hawaii County Council will choose to accept it.

Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna reported Wednesday that the federal Drug Enforcement Administration is ready to provide a $282,000 grant for the island's marijuana eradication program.

Bending to complaints raised basy residents opposed to the eradication program, the council last year voted to not include any grant funding for it in the 2007-08 budget.

HILO -- Should Hawaii County refuse to accept a $282,000 federal Drug Enforcement Administration grant for the island's marijuana eradication program, there is a possibility federal authorities will initiate their own eradication program, a DEA official said Friday.

Garrison Courtney, a DEA official in Washington, D.C., said his agency typically tries to respect the efforts of local jurisdictions in controlling illegal drugs like marijuana.

"There's a possibility" the DEA would initiate its own marijuana eradication program on the Big Island if the local Police Department was unable to control the problem and if it were discovered harvested crops were being shipped to the mainland, he said.

Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna reported this week the county stands to receive a $282,000 federal Drug Enforcement Administration grant for the island's marijuana eradication program, which presently is low on funding and operating on fumes.

The program gives the Police Department the required capital to use helicopters to locate illegal marijuana crops.
