There's no magic pill to cure the heroin epidemic but judges in Ohio think they may have found an injection that can at least put a big dent in the problem.

Now Kentucky lawmakers will look at whether Vivitrol could work in Kentucky, where it hasn't been tried in the legal system.

Hocking County, Ohio Municipal Court Judge Frederick Moses will talk to Kentucky lawmakers on Thursday in Lexington about the success he's had in his drug court with Vivitrol to help addicts kick the habit.

HUNTINGTON -- In the coming weeks and days, Alesia Brydie will get to know her neighbors more closely and watch for suspicious activity.

Like many other Huntington residents, the recent violence has concerned Brydie, who lives in the Southside neighborhood. The shooting in the early morning hours of May 22 on Charleston Avenue, which took the lives of four teenagers, disturbed her and made her concerned for the safety of her two children, ages 18 and 22.

For first time in three years, officers will be devoted to undercover drug work

HUNTINGTON -- For the first time in almost three years, the Huntington Police Department will devote a unit of full-time officers for undercover work combating the city's drug and prostitution problem.

The new local drug unit began this month and will be fully staffed by March, said Lt. Hank Dial with the Huntington Police Department.

The unit will allow the police department to more effectively pursue tips and complaints they receive from the public on prostitution and drug activity in Huntington, officers say.

Communities and law enforcement work together against rural criminals

MILTON -- When Robert and Mary Ellen Ball returned one afternoon in March 2003 to their Milton home, they found their door wide open and belongings tossed all across their home.

From left Peggy Brooks, Katrina Nelson, and her 4-yea-old daughter Kiley Nelson stand beside a "Community Watch" sign posted near their homes at the corner of Florence Ct. and Pinehurst Lane in Spring Valley Friday afternoon. Brooks and Nelson started a neighborhood watch program earlier this year and have noticed a marked difference in the amount of crime and strange vehicles in the area. The burglars took only a small amount, but the Balls memory of that day is still fresh.

Four Methamphetamine Labs Uncovered Last Week In Cabell County

HUNTINGTON -- Learning last week that a methamphetamine laboratory may have been operating over his head unbeknownst to him came as a shock to Spring Valley resident Craig Kitchen.

The Huntington Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force's tools of the trade for busting methamphetamine labs include gas masks, protective boots and gloves.

While he was tending bar at Marco's Bar and Grill last Monday evening, authorities raided an apartment above the Huntington bar at 411 9th St. they suspected as a meth lab and arrested a Julian Richard Stark, 52, who lived at the address. Stark was charged with possession with intent to distribute.

151 Marijuana Plants Found, Cut Near Milton

State police destroyed multiple fields of marijuana growing around the Milton area Monday.

With the aid of a helicopter, the state police found and cut 151 plants growing along Cooper's Ridge and Rock Camp Road near Milton.

State police believe the marijuana finds will net one arrest in the near future.

The state police use the helicopter in Cabell County about once a year to find marijuana, said Sgt. A.H. Arnold, the Cabell County detachment commander for the state police.

HUNTINGTON -- Money taken from the assets seized from the owner of a crack house in Huntington was presented to the Huntington Violent Crime and Drug Task Force Friday.

United States Attorney Kasey Warner presented a $36,000 check taken from the assets of William T. Craft who was prosecuted recently for operating a crack house in Huntington. Investigators first began investigating the operation in 2002.

Law enforcement officials credit the asset forfeiture program for reducing the supplies of drugs on the street. With the program, someone convicted of dealing drugs must forfeit all possessions bought with the drug money to the task force, which uses the money for day-to-day operations. This often serves as a greater deterrent to selling drugs than jail does, Warner said.
