I totally agree with the Lancet report that states that those smoking marijuana are 41-per-cent more likely to experience psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia and delusions.

When my son was a teen, he got into the wrong crowd and started smoking marijuana.

He ended up in the psychiatric ward three times with psychosis, including delusions and hallucinations. He was labelled bipolar.

Luckily, he learned some tough lessons and stopped smoking entirely. He is now 26 and studying hard to become a lawyer.

I hope pot never becomes legal, because that would give young people the message that it is OK to smoke it.

It may not affect some, but for others it can lead to psychosis.

MANATEE -- Drug and crime activity is down significantly since the entrance to Bermuda 100 was closed in April, according to Manatee County Sheriff's Col. Chuck Hagaman. That's why it will stay closed for at least another nine months in hopes the trend continues.

Officials in April closed the north intersection of 57th Avenue East and Seventh Street Court East - the main entrance to the Bermuda 100 neighborhood - to curb drive-through crimes, such as open-air drug deals and drive-by shootings. To that end, it has been successful, but not popular.

4 CN NS: OPED: Reform Pot Laws - Do It For 15 Million CanadiansMon, 30 Jul 2007
Source:Chronicle Herald (CN NS) Author:Leger, Dan Area:Nova Scotia Lines:117 Added:07/30/2007

IT'S TIME to admit that one of the biggest "drug problems" in this country is the obsolete legal framework that criminalizes, stigmatizes and ultimately fails to regulate marijuana use.

This spring, a United Nations agency ranked Canadians in the top five in world marijuana use. The UN calls us a land of stoners.

I think that's sheer baloney, despite the occasional whiff of pot smoke I detect drifting down Argyle Street.

At 53 years old and having been a high school student in the late 1960s, I know what the stuff smells like. Recreational drug use has been an issue since I was a boy.

Colombia Announced It Will Favor Manual Eradication of Coca Crops Over the Current System, Which Focuses Heavily on Aerial Spraying

BOGOTA -- In a major policy shift likely to get both praise and close examination in Washington, Colombia has announced it will favor manual eradication of coca crops over the current system that focuses heavily on aerial fumigation.

The iconic image of Colombia's largely U.S.-funded war on drugs may well be a single-engine airplane spraying bright green fields of coca bushes with chemical defoliants -- the country's key strategy since the 1980s.

Former S.C. Treasurer Indicted

But Federal Guidelines Indicate He Could Get 6 Months' House Arrest

COLUMBIA -- If convicted on a federal drug charge, former S.C. Treasurer Thomas Ravenel could receive as little as six months' house arrest and probation, according to an analysis of federal sentencing guidelines by The State. The most prison time that Ravenel likely would face would be about four years. The guidelines are not mandatory but are followed in about 70 percent of federal criminal cases in South Carolina.

7 UK: Regrading Cannabis 'Will Help Cut Crime'Sun, 29 Jul 2007

HOME Office consideration of the reclassification of cannabis will help fight organised crime, according to one of Scotland's leading police officers.

Graeme Pearson believes the downgrading of the drug was the catalyst for organised crime to move into mass production of cannabis across Scotland.

The Home Office announcement came after Scotland on Sunday revealed that more than one industrial-sized cannabis production factory is being discovered each week in the country.

Pearson, director-general of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) is a long-term critic of the decision in 2004 to change cannabis from a Class B drug to Class C.

Promising Research on Lab Mice Could Lead to Better Treatment for Addicts

LONDON - Researchers working with laboratory mice have found a way to reverse the effects of cocaine on the brain, according to a study published on Thursday that could lead to better treatments for drug addicts.

The researchers focused on the part of the brain they knew was involved with pleasure and addictive drugs and found a way to repress hyperactive cells charged up by cocaine.

Scientists have long studied what parts of the brain are affected by cocaine but this study is the first to identify the mechanism needed to reverse the effects of cocaine, said Christian Luscher, the Swiss researcher who led the study.

9 US CA: PUB LTE: Pot Growers Will ContinueWed, 25 Jul 2007

Editor: I'm writing about the July 21 story, "Pot worth millions found in cornfield."

I'm sure many marijuana growers and sellers are thankful to the Merced Multi-Agency Narcotics Task Force for this latest marijuana bust and others like it.

Without operations like this, marijuana would be worth what other easy-to-grow weeds are worth -- very little.

Thanks to the Drug Enforcement Administration and other so-called "drug warriors" the easy-to-grow weed is worth more than pure gold -- and completely tax free.

Any marijuana growers, sellers or traffickers arrested will soon be replaced. They always are.

Friends Seek Transfer To Canadian Custody

KEVIN Hiebert celebrates his 33rd birthday today the same way he's marked the previous seven -- from the inside of a Greek prison cell.

But friends of the former West Kildonan resident are rallying to support him and generate pressure to get him transferred to Canada to serve out his sentence.

Hiebert was arrested in October 1999 at an Athens airport as he tried to smuggle two kilograms of cocaine in the heels of three pairs of shoes.
