For years, an unusual coalition of advocates and lawmakers has worked to legalize medical marijuana in New Jersey.

Last month, the group won its biggest victory to date when the Senate approved a medical-marijuana bill in a bipartisan vote of 22-16. It was the first time such legislation had made it past the committee stage to a floor vote in Trenton.

Supporters of medical marijuana are hopeful the Assembly will follow suit. Gov. Corzine has already said he would "absolutely" sign the bill into law if it reached his desk.

A bill to legalize and tax marijuana is getting lots of attention not only here in California but across the nation where people are wondering if it's finally time to put marijuana in the same category as wine, beer and liquor.

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, (D-San Francisco) who introduced AB 390 to legalize pot smoking for those over 21 and allow commercial farming of the drug and tax it at $50 per ounce, says it would raise about $1 billion a year for state coffers.

But tension remains over medical marijuana dispensaries and drug laws. In fact, many local cities have outright banned the dispensaries, wanting no part of the dispute.

Californians in 1996 overwhelmingly supported legalizing marijuana for medical patients, but did voters anticipate toking for headaches or anxiety?
