Dana Larsen's petition to de-criminalize simple marijuana possession went up in smoke on Wednesday. But the pro-marijuana advocate is on a roll as he blew through the Okanagan Valley this week.

The former leader of the Marijuana Party successfully tested the waters when his token petition to amend the Police Act was accepted by Elections B.C. on Monday. On Wednesday, however, it was withdrawn by Larsen.

"The proponent had indicated to us that he was not interested in canvassing for signatures at this time, and that his intention in applying for the petition was to test his application and draft bill," said chief electoral officer Keith Archer.

Dana Larsen brings his decriminalize-pot message to the Okanagan next week.

Larsen, a former leader of the Marijuana Party, is touring Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon to promote new legislation that would decriminalize pot possession in the province. Recent votes to legalize cannabis in the U.S. have boosted his campaign.

"Reporters from around B.C. and across Canada have been calling to find out how we plan to do it in B.C. after what activists accomplished in Washington and Colorado," he said in a statement.

Man, 60, hits the jackpot after not playing his usual numbers

B.C. marijuana advocate vows to use part of his windfall to fund legalization efforts It was three times lucky this week for B.C. pot advocates.

First Washington state and Colorado voters decided the time had come to legalize marijuana.

That surprising development spurred a flurry of news coverage and momentum for SensibleBC.ca, a campaign organization dedicated to putting marijuana decriminalization to a referendum in B.C.

And third time luckiest was Terrace pot advocate Bob Erb, who won a cool $25 million in the Nov. 2 Lotto Max draw to end a phenomenal week for marijuana enthusiasts.

Mayor's opinion remains unchanged

The call to legalize marijuana is getting louder, says a Nanaimo criminologist.

Three-quarters of B.C. residents support the taxed sale of cannabis to adults, similar to alcohol and tobacco, according to an Angus Reid poll commissioned by Stop the Violence B.C., a pro-legalization group

Of almost 800 people polled, 75 per cent said they would choose government regulation and taxation of the drug over maintaining pot's outlaw status. Last year 64 per cent supported legalization.

Liberal approach draws visitors to 'Vansterdam'

It's known as the Amsterdam of North America, a mecca of cannabis culture that sparks more than curiosity for many visitors. The pungent scent of marijuana drifts regularly in the air on the streets of "Vansterdam," and advocates say Vancouver's permissive attitude toward pot draws visitors and their pocketbooks.

But while marijuana use may be tacitly ignored, police warn that possession is illegal, so tourists looking to indulge in the pot scene still need to proceed with caution.

Vancouverite advocates for drug legalization, regulation

From 2006 to 2008, Neil Magnuson in-line skated some 5,000 kilometres across Canada to raise awareness about what he sees as an attack on Canadians' freedom - laws prohibiting the possession and/or use of drugs, especially marijuana.

This year the Vancouver man is taking a similar message on the road - only this time he's eschewing the considerable logistical and physical stress of doing it under his own steam for something most would find a bit more realistic for his 55-year-old body.

Tokers mark 4/20 with annual plea to legalize marijuana

How's this for a protest: At exactly 4:20 p.m.: a thousand people in the grass and there emerged an indistinct cheer and the friendly rhythms of puff, puff and pass.

Once again, Winnipeggers descended on the Manitoba legislature Friday afternoon to observe 4/20 -- the worldwide date to celebrate the benefits of marijuana and protest its continued prohibition. Police would eventually shoo them away at about 5:30 p.m. But first, there was a lot of talking -- and toking -- to do.

Editor, The News:

The majority of the public recognizes that prohibition of marijuana does not work and only contributes to crime and costs to taxpayers.

Unfortunately, the majority of Conservative voters have their head in the sand on this issue.

The Conservative government is basing its policy on these Conservative supporters and keeping the Americans happy.

In 2006, I was the riding candidate for the marijuana party. I ran because the absurdity of the prohibition laws was one of the most illogical policies inexistence and I wanted this to be an issue.

To the Editor,

Re: Legalization a federal matter, Letters, Feb. 21.

Jim Corder asked: "... where is the Marijuana Party in all of this? Given the current zeitgeist they could be shedding their reputation as a fringe party and garnering a lot of votes."

The Marijuana Party was burned to the ground and then bulldozed by changes to the election laws that took effect in 2004. Marijuana and the Marijuana Party are in similar social situations, being attacked and wiped out while the only possible practical resistance is to retreat and attempt to still survive somehow.

For several years, the Conservative Party has had more money than all other parties combined, and 10,000 times more money than the Marijuana Party.

I'm in total agreement with everything in both of these articles, but is it not a federal matter rather than provincial?

Premier Christy Clark doesn't appear to be against ending prohibition but she said she'd leave it up to the feds and I think she's right.

The people we need to convince are the prime minister and Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

So, the remnants of the federal Liberal party straggle into frigid Ottawa for a policy conference. I give them credit for that. It is always a good idea for political parties to regularly review what they presently stand for, what they should stand for, and make the necessary changes.

And what was the most significant policy this sagacious body of concerned Liberals voted for - in overwhelming numbers I might add?

Something to do with creating jobs for Canadians? Nope. Something to do with strengthening our Canadian economy in a global era of uncertainty? Uh-uh. Something about reducing federal spending or reducing taxes on hard working Canadians? Not on your life.No siree. The Liberals' top priority was a vote to legalize marijuana. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, there are many more pressing concerns facing our community and our country than this. It is telling that the Liberals are so out of touch with the lives and priorities of the average Canadian.

Guelph Liberal MP Frank Valeriote should cross the floor to the party that best represents his priorities - the marijuana party.

Last weekend's Liberal Convention went out in a blaze of glory.

Well maybe it wasn't quite that dramatic, but something pretty amazing did happen.

The convention, held in Ottawa this past weekend, ended with a mind-blowing resolution. An overwhelming majority of convention-goers voted in favour of adding marijuana legalization to the official party platform. A fringe issue? Perhaps. But it could also be a bellwether for the future of the party that was considered to be, just a few short years ago, Canada's =93natural ruling party=94.

The Liberal Party is inviting the whole electorate to help choose its next leader, after a weekend conference pried the levers of power from the party elite, picking a young, denim-clad entrepreneur as president and calling for legalization of marijuana.

Interim leader Bob Rae dominated the gathering, championing the push to open up the party and adding fuel to a bonfire of speculation about whether he wants the permanent job.

The future of the party remains unsettled. President Mike Crawley's victory over Chretien-era cabinet minister Sheila Copps, who was backed by the Liberal establishment, was paper-cut thin. And Conservatives are bound to claim delegates were more concerned with keeping potheads out of jail than with rescuing the middle class from its economic doldrums.

Dear Sir:

Once again the RCMP exaggerate the numbers ("Huge pot seizure results in charges against local couple," The Terrace Standard, Sept. 21, 2011) in which they claim a seizure of 28 pounds of marijuana is the equivalent of more than 35,000 joints.

In reality, 28 pounds times 600 joints per pound equals 16,800 joints.

Having used marijuana for 43 years, 38 of those years using 10 joints daily, I've probably rolled well in excess of 150,000 joints.
