A local marijuana activist is taking his fight to end prohibition to Ottawa, but he's taking his sweet time on the way there.

Neil Magnuson continued his "freedom tour" in Vancouver yesterday. He began in Victoria, and plans to rollerblade across the country before reaching the nation's capital in November.

"I'm taking my time, I want to talk to as many people along the way as possible," said Magnuson in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. "I want to talk to them about freedom and righst and wake them up."

Sign Removal, Ejection From All-Candidates Sessions Infringement Of Rights, Claim Says

The Marijuana Party of B.C. just can't get any respect in the Fraser Valley's Bible belt.

The party went to B.C. Supreme Court Friday, saying officials of the Surrey school board and the City of Abbotsford have infringed on the rights of its candidates by ripping down the party's signs and banning its standard-bearers from all-candidates meetings.

In documents filed with the court, the party says municipal employees in Abbotsford took down the signs of Abbotsford-Mount Lehman candidate Tim Felger because of their proximity to a local school.

Amanda Boggan, who's representing the Marijuana party in Surrey-Green Timbers, was initially invited to attend a political debate for students at Queen Elizabeth Secondary on Wednesday morning.

However, she was contacted by a student organizer the night before and asked not to show up.

"I was a bit stunned. I've never been disinvited to anything in my life," Boggan said. "I got off the phone and felt like a bad person for awhile, and then realized it was actually detrimental to the students' education about the electoral process for certain parties to be excluded."

25 CN BC: LTE: Marijuana Party Not WantedWed, 27 Apr 2005

Thanks Neil Magnuson, but we don't need a Marijuana Party in Surrey/ Whalley, or anywhere else for that matter.

Drugs should be handled by pharmaceutical companies, and if pot is a medicine then they should be handling it, not a political party. No one should grow pot at home. If it is not approved by the government as safe, then it will not be sold.

Pot is becoming a very dangerous thing on our streets.

Not only do people spoil homes with it but it's addictive, and it is being used behind wheels of cars .

Neil Magnuson wants Surrey residents to have access to safe medication, namely marijuana, which is reportedly useful for some maladies including glaucoma and treatment for nausea related to chemotherapy.

Magnuson is running for the Marijuana Party in Surrey-Whalley, and for now, lives out of the back of his van.

Apart from legalizing pot, which he lists as his number-one priority, the 48-year-old carpenter wants people to have "personal autonomy," giving people the authority to manage their own lives without government intrusion, referring to marijuana laws.
