TWO COUNTY GUARDS SUSPENDED AFTER DRUG BUSTS

Two Gloucester County corrections officers have been suspended without pay
while authorities investigate allegations that they were involved in
smuggling illegal drugs into the United States from Mexico, authorities
said yesterday.

Spencer Scott, 30, of Mantua, was arrested Aug. 8 at the Dallas-Fort Worth
International Airport after Customs Service inspectors reported finding
vials of steroids hidden under his clothing, according to Judy Turner, a
Customs Service spokeswoman in Texas.

That same day, Andrew Kullen of Deptford was detained at Philadelphia
International Airport after a man with whom he had traveled from Cancun was
arrested and charged with having carried suspected illegal drugs into the
country, Gloucester County Undersheriff Ronald Bates said.

No drugs were found on Kullen, and he was not arrested, Bates said.

Investigators are looking into whether the Dallas and Philadelphia airport
incidents were linked, Bates said.

Turner said Scott and a traveling companion, Brian Hill, 28, of Westville,
were arrested in Texas after they were searched and found to be carrying,
between them, 94 vials of anabolic steroids and testosterone.

Each is charged with a misdemeanor punishable by a $2,000 fine and up to
two years in prison, said Tom Shehan, chief of the Dallas-Fort Worth
International Department of Public Safety.

Hill posted $2,000 bail, and Scott posted $1,000 bail, Shehan said.
