DRUG CORRUPTION HIT HIGH IN POLICE RANKS IN '94-'96

Federal police commanders transported drug money and employed drug
traffickers as policemen on orders from deceased drug lord Amado
Carrillo Fuentes during the mid-1990s, according to testimony from
court documents, a Mexican newspaper reported Wednesday.

The corruption - which allegedly occurred between 1994 and 1996 in a
federal office charged with fighting the drug trade - could mark yet
another stain on Mexico's anti-drug enforcement in recent years.

A statement by the Attorney General's Office appeared to lend credence
to the authenticity of the documents, by pledging to open an
investigation into whether court officials or prosecutors illegally
leaked the information.
