IN RESPONSE TO 'LET'S NOT GO UP IN SMOKE'

ROY CLANCY warns society of the grave and ominous danger of legalizing
marijuana. ("Let's not go up in smoke," June 2.) He rhetorically asks: "Do
we really want widespread use of a drug that makes heavy users lethargic
and slow-witted?" What of the smorgasbord of cold remedies and other
over-the-counter, patent concoctions for lethargy-inducing and
thought-scrambling side effects? That's not to mention the vast assortment
of prescription medications with side effects that make bella donna seem
safe as apple pie. Don't they count?

(Exactly the sort of loopy logic Clancy warned about.)
