NEEDLE EXCHANGE BILL ADVANCES

SACRAMENTO, April 8 (UPI) - A much-vetoed needle exchange proposal is
moving through the California Legislature. The bill by Assemblywoman
Kerry Mazzoni, D- San Rafael, would allow local officials to set up
clean needle exchange programs as a way to prevent new HIV infections
associated with the sharing of contaminated needles. The measure
passed its first policy committee this week with backing from the San
Francisco AIDS Foundation.
