FAUTEUX JR., M.D., New Bedford NATURE OF ADDICTION WILL NEVER CHANGE Kudos to The Standard-Times for the recent articles concerning the drug problem in our community. My concern, after reading these articles, is in recognizing the subtle implication that needle exchange offers a significant solution to contain the spread of HIV/AIDS. This is erroneous! My professional experience in Connecticut state-operated and private rehabilitation centers reinforces the conviction that needle exchange does not, and will not, alter the dissemination of this deadly disease. Needle-sharing is the unwritten law accepted and promulgated among drug addicts. Free needles to the addict gives legitimacy to perpetuate this activity. The very nature of addiction will never change, nor will its associated attitude of camaraderie. LOUIS Z. FAUTEUX JR., M.D., New Bedford - --- MAP posted-by: Rich O'Grady
