DRUG ADDICTION IS A MEDICAL PROBLEM

I APPLAUD your editorial concerning Gov. Gilmore's drug plan (Sept. 22,
"Don't accept anti-drug plan on faith alone"). The public needs to be aware
of this plan focusing on drug offenders, spending a huge amount of taxes
following the well-worn path of the drug war. The governor's approach to
these problems is misguided, as he attempts to counteract drug abuse with
more and more police officers.

Doctors agree that drug addiction is a medical problem, which requires
medical, not violent solutions. If we truly care about helping drug users
stop using drugs, then we should redirect out efforts.
