To the editors:

The Dec. 20 Viewpoints featured three letters on Texas A&M
University's Bonfire tradition and accident. All three admitted they
had no direct interest in or knowledge of A&M or its traditions.

Herein is a basic ill of our society. All three were typical "feel
good" letters, requiring nothing from the writers; no time, money or
effort was expended. Not even sacrifice or inconvenience.

All advocated limiting or controlling what others do, usually by
government action and always in the name of safety or health.

I say to these and others of their ilk, "Butt out!" Butt out of A&M's
affairs, my affairs and your neighbors' business.
