1 KILLED, 1 HURT IN POMPANO SHOOTOUT; POLICE SAY SHOTS COULD BE DRUG RELATED

Police are investigating a shootout over what they are calling a drug
transaction that left one man wounded and another man dead early Tuesday
morning in Pompano Beach.

Anthony Key, 23, of Pompano Beach, died of numerous gunshot wounds at the
scene in the 100 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue, said Sandra King,
Pompano Beach police spokeswoman.

Damian Daley, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, was taken to North Broward Medical
Center after he suffered a gunshot wound at the scene.

Police are still trying to determine what exactly happened.

``We don't know if it was a robbery attempt or an altercation. We are
hearing different versions from witnesses. We are trying to sort it out,''
King said.

This is what police do know:

Just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said Daley and Quincy McGee, 21,
drove to an apartment in the 100 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue,
allegedly in order to buy marijuana. While McGee sat in the driver's seat,
Daley walked up to the apartment, police said.

That's when a string of gunshots sprayed the scene.

Some of them hit Key, whom police believe was standing outside the door of
the apartment, King said.

A bleeding Daley made his way back to the car as McGee drove to Interstate
95, looking for North Broward Medical Center, police said.

The car's tire blew out, and McGee drove off the ramp of Copans Road, where
he dialed 911 on his cellular telephone, King said.

An ambulance picked Daley up and took him to North Broward Medical Center.

No charges have been filed against Daley or McGee.

The case is still under investigation.
