$3M AID TO TACKLE DRUG MENACE

THE Federal Government has allocated more than $3 million to South
Australian drug programs.

The funding, announced yesterday by the federal Health Minister, Dr
Wooldridge, has been awarded under the nationwide Tough on Drugs program.

One of the major beneficiaries is a project run by a women's Aboriginal
council to combat the growing problem of alcohol sniffing among young
indigenous people.

The Ngaanyatjarra Pitjanjatjara Yankunytjajara Women's Council Aboriginal
Corporation received $810,307 for its program in SA, Western Australia and
the Northern Territory.

The Hindmarsh Youth Centre received $663,756 for a non-medical
detoxification centre for young homeless people affected by drugs.

Adelaide Central Mission received funding for two programs - $358,810 to
assist young people into mainstream health and treatment services, and
$244,845 to establish a family program targeting single parents at Kuitpo.

Women's Council Aboriginal Corporation $810,307; Hindmarsh Youth Centre
$663,756; The Construction and Other Industries Drug and Alcohol Program
$40,000; Youth Advisory Forum $55,620; Vietnamese Community in Australia
