WHY CRACKHOUSES EXIST

RE "A padlock on crime" (Aug. 24): Your article notes, "Crime-busting MPP
Jim Brown says the province will unveil a plan this fall to padlock known
crackhouses." In the U.S. in the 1920s, the speakeasies were also frequently
padlocked in big "crime sweeps."

Perhaps an exaggeration ad absurdum of drug prohibition will finally reveal
to the public the reason why crackhouses exist in the first place.

gangsters)
