Pubdate: Mon, 08 Jun 1998 Source: Eastern Daily Press (Norfolk, UK) Contact: CLUBBER DIES AFTER TAKING ECSTASY Police were last night investigating the source of a drug after a young man collapsed and died from taking Ecstasy. Davis Breakspear, 22, died in Treliske Hospital at Truro about 36 hours after he was found collapsed in the lavatories of a nightclub at Penzance early on Saturday. Mr Beakspear lived with his parents in Penzance. A Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said: "Our main objective is to indentify the supplier to make sure this des not happen to anyone else." "It may be related to the poor standard of the drug." Det Sgt Malcolm Reed said Mr Breakspear appeared to have become dehydrated after he failed to drink enough fluid. He added: "We do not know the quantity of the drug he took but it may have been just one tablet." Janet Betts, of the Leah Betts Helpline, which was set up after her 18-year-old daughter died from Ecstasy in 1995, said: "I don't think anybody really knows the true figure as coroners are kind to parents." "If somebody dies from kidney failure or a brain haemorrhage three days after taking the drug, that is what goes on the death certificate." She added: "About 30 people have died from Ecstasy this year but I have no doubt it is more that that." - --- Checked-by: Melodi Cornett
