Source: The Media Awareness Project of DrugSense Pubdate: 25 May 1998 Dear Newshawks: Already press releases have been sent by many organizations to various media about the ‘GLOBAL DAYS AGAINST THE DRUG WAR’, JUNE 5-10. With 90 reform organizations involved and events in 40 cities worldwide we hope to gain press coverage. Details about the events are at: http://www.stopthedrugwar.org/globalcoalition/ The Global Days are a response to the occasion of the United Nations Special Session of the General Assembly on Drugs, UNGASS, which starts Monday June 8th. As one report on the UN event noted: 'It is clear from the Special Session's stated objectives, that it will not, as was originally hoped, produce an overall evaluation of the efficiency and viability of present anti-drugs strategies. Instead, the stage is set for a validation of existing policies with little room for substantive change.' The UN's web page for the special session appears to be: http://www.undcp.org/undcp/ga/index.htm We encourage all newshawks to send us any and all published news stories on both events as they appear over the next few weeks. It is important to document the media coverage. But it is also important to provide the newspaper articles which may be the targets of our many writers of Letters to the Editor. Send your articles to Details on how to newshawk are at: http://www.mapinc.org/hawk.htm Thank you, newshawks, for all that you do!
