DRUG-DETECTOR A GREAT IDEA

3 Dec 1998

THE EDITOR, Madam:

That there is a machine to test for ingested drugs is only timely and well
thought out. Ms. Ogilvie, senior Customs agent and her staff should be
applauded. Over the years, the United States and Europe, in an effort to
boost their own tourism sectors, have all called Jamaica a drug infested
haven. Well then, let us see how much their citizens co-operate in the
"cleansing" of this infestation. Kudos to all involved. I personally have
no problems with this new system, because, surprise, surprise, I have
nothing to fear. A little street smarts, i.e. do not take from or hold
someone else's bag at the airport and watching your own bags, should take
care of any pitfalls of the system. Great idea!!!

THE INNOCENT HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR

4 Dec 1998

The Editor, Madam:

Regarding the Customs machine which checks for ingested drugs, I think it's
a great idea. As a Jamaican living in the US for the past 25 years, I get
tired of hearing of Jamaica as a sex and drug haven. The illegal activities
people won't do in their own countries, they somehow think it's okay in
Jamaica.

Every time I come back to Atlanta from Jamaica, US Customs has a
drug-sniffing dog wandering around the baggage claim area. I have yet to
hear any objections to this practice. The bottom line is if you're not
doing anything illegal, you have nothing to fear.
