MP ASKS FOR INQUIRY INTO HEROIN TRIAL

THE effectiveness of providing heroin to addicts may be investigated by a
parliamentary select committee.

A proposal presented to State Parliament yesterday to establish such a
committee is likely to be voted on next week and is understood to have wide
support.

Liberal MP Mr. Hamilton-Smith has proposed that a committee investigate
whether the Government should conduct a scientific medical trial "as part of
a program of rehabilitation".

He said such a trial would need to be tougher on drugs than previous
attempts.

"We in South Australia have always taken the lead on social reform. We can
and must do so again." Mr. Hamilton-Smith said.

The Opposition's health spokeswoman, Ms Lea Stevens, said she would be
supporting the motion, but members would have a conscience vote.
