CALGARY CITY COUNCIL GREEN-LIGHTS PUBLIC MARIJUANA CONSUMPTION SITES

CALGARY - City council approved changes on Monday to allow areas in
Calgary where people can smoke or otherwise consume marijuana in public.

The city's Cannabis Consumption Bylaw prohibits public consumption in
all forms, even after marijuana becomes legal in October. Changes to
the bylaw will allow designated consumption areas both around the city
and at festivals and events.

The city says there are currently no proposed designated cannabis
consumption areas for Calgary's public spaces, but councillors can now
begin identifying potential sites.

People will also be allowed to smoke, vape or consume cannabis in
specific spaces at festivals without the risk of being ticketed while
"potential impacts to youth and festival goers who wish to avoid
exposure to cannabis will be reduced," according to the city.

The city says designated cannabis consumption spaces will be open-air,
fenced sites rather than tents because provincial regulations ban
smoking in an enclosed space.Article Continued Below

Events will be able to apply for a monitored marijuana consumption
space, and city council plans to monitor the impact on the 2019
festival season.
