MANAGING MARIJUANA

The P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission is a good choice for managing
Prince Edward Island's new marijuana stores. The LCC is well equipped
for developing policy and providing oversight.

It is also good that the provincial government has decided its pot
sales will be conducted from different storefronts than its liquor
sales.

It just gets the right message out there: If it is not good for the
PEILCC to sell liquor and pot from the same premises, it's not good
for a consumer to mix liquor and pot.

The provincial government, in keeping with federal legislation that
will see marijuana legalized by next July, is getting ready. The size
of the stores, and how the marijuana will be sold and at what price,
still needs to be determined.

Also needed will be trained drug recognition officers and screening
devices for determining whether drivers are impaired by drugs.

Driving impaired is a serious problem in this province and most of the
time, although not exclusively, the impairment is caused by alcohol.
By next summer, when marijuana consumption becomes legal in private
residences, impairment by marijuana could very well add another layer
of concern. Combining the two ingredients could make things very
complicated, and dangerous.

If you're going to drink, don't drive. If you're smoking pot, don't
drive. If you're thinking about smoking pot and drinking, just don't.
