MAGAZINE OUTLINES PROBLEMS WITH POT

To the editor:

Monday's editorial about PM Justin Trudeau facing an "uphill battle"
in respect to pushing through cannabis legislation next summer seems
to coincide with the recent discovery of a magazine I found in my
doctor's waiting room.

It is called "Drug Facts For Young People" and is a free publication
by Regional Maple Leaf Communications Inc., of Edmonton.

A copy should be placed in every politician's briefcase and every
student's backpack.

Here are a few excerpts:

* Cannabis (marijuana) is a combination of the dried leaves and
flowers of the hemp plant. The cannabis cultivated today ... contains
a much higher concentration of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol)
(which is) the main active chemical having the mind-altering effect on
the brain.

* "Hash" is the resin from the dried flower tops and usually
contains more THC than marijuana. Hash oil is made by boiling the
flowers in an organic solvent and can contain as much as 70 per cent
THC in its strongest form.

* Health risks of frequent use include respiratory issues (such
as) bronchitis. Heavy use has been linked to schizophrenia in some
people. The ability to study or learn is impaired because of the
difficulty to concentrate and could affect motivation.

* Combining marijuana use with other drugs intensifies each of
their effects.

Other drug abuse problems are covered as well, such as alcohol,
caffeine, nicotine, prescription and non-prescription
medications.
