JODIE EMERY IS LOOKING OUT FOR HERSELF

Re: Pot plan means harsher laws and punishment, April 18.

Jodie Emery's past advocacy on behalf of legalization is laudable, but
now, on the verge of victory, it appears that Emery and her husband,
Marc, are doing more harm than good.

Emery cries out in fear that current illegal producers and sellers of
marijuana may be displaced or unable to thrive under the new regime.

Most laughable, perhaps, is the call for reparations. Surely I'm not
the only one who considered that Emery and her husband would be
beneficiaries of such reparations. It appears Emery is not advocating
in the best interests of the Canadian public, and instead advocating
on behalf of her own financial future.

With sweeping social and legal changes of this kind, there will always
be winners and losers. The Emerys broke the law by trafficking a drug
that was illegal. They need to come to grips with the fact that their
own actions make them ineligible to personally profit under the new
regime, and they should not risk using their influence to sideline
this initiative for their own crass commercial interests.
