STONER'S DREAM MACHINE ROLLS 100 JOINTS IN THREE MINUTES

In Nevada, marijuana is slated to be legalized for recreational use on
July 1 -- as soon as it is, the folks at Acres Cannabis in Las Vegas
look forward to selling some 5,000 joints in just 48 hours.

Their plans to meet the crush for kush are more sophisticated than
enlisting a bunch of stoners to twist up fatties. Instead, the
dispensary will be using the Futurola Knockbox, a Dutch-made
contraption that rolls out 100 joints every three minutes or so.

Taking a break from operating the machine, store manager and
roller-in-chief Nick Sanchez says that twisting up 100 joints by hand
would take hours for even an adroit pothead.

The process resembles something dreamed up by the Henry Ford of high
living.

It all begins -- how else -- with a load of marijuana. Buds, along
with residual trimmings, get separated from stems by hand and are
ground to the consistency of the tobacco you find in regular cigarettes.

Suitably mashed, the weed is transported in large plastic bins, where
it's scooped up and fed into the joint-rolling machine. Pre-rolled
cones of cigarette paper are set to be filled with a gram of weed each.

Sanchez presses a button and the Futurola comes to life, vibrating
like a TV-room massage chair. Weed slowly drops down into the papers
until -- with a twist and a flourish -- 100 fresh joints join an
ever-growing pile.

For quality control, Sanchez says, "Just to make sure the rolling is
consistent, I have to try a couple."

The joints will sell for between $5 and $10 each.

Vegas being Vegas, the crew members behind Acres Cannabis are striving
to make their shop into a bit of a show. Customers can watch Sanchez
doing his joint-rolling thing and operating a second machine that
extracts oil from marijuana (to be jazzed up with flavors like
green-apple, strawberry-lemonade and creamsicle).
