CHILD, 3, TESTS POSITIVE FOR MARIJUANA AT PATERSON HOSPITAL

Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale confirmed Saturday afternoon that
city police are investigating a report that a 3-year-old tested positive
for marijuana early Saturday morning.

Speziale said that at 3 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, police were met by
child protective services at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center because
"a 3-year-old had tested positive for marijuana."

"It is an unfortunate situation," Speziale said. "We don't if it is
because of contact or ingestion. We take these situations as serious."

The situation could lead to the child's removal from family, he said.
Speziale said information was sketchy. He was not sure if the victim as
male or female or even a resident of Paterson.

The 3-year-old, Speziale said, could have come from any of "50
jurisdictions" and these kinds of reports greatly inflate the city's drug
incident numbers. The Paterson Police Department is currently completing
an offense report about the incident and the matter will be referred to
the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
