LIBS CHIP AWAY AT LAW AND ORDER

Ottawa achieved a dubious distinction over the weekend when the
capital saw its 50th shooting of 2016. With a quarter of the year left
to go, that beats the previous record of 49 set in 2014.

Now, I am not prepared to invite outrage and opprobrium from the left
by suggesting that we might encapsulate the increased violence with
the sobriquet of "welcome to Justin Trudeau's Canada." But it does
suggest that while Canada enforces some of the toughest gun control
legislation in the world, the criminals never have any difficulty in
obtaining weapons.

Mind you, Ottawa's gun war pales when compared with Chicago, of which
it might well be said, "welcome to President Barack Obama's America."
The windy city also has stringent municipal gun control laws -
promulgated in response to the escalating gang violence that became
not just a local nuisance but a national embarrassment over a decade
ago - but that hasn't impaired either the number of shootings or the
homicide rate. Over the Labor Day weekend, Chicago registered its
500th murder and the bloodbath has continued unabated since then with
568 homicides officially registered as of last weekend. It's been a
trend that has made life in Chicago over the last 10 years more
dangerous than a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

So that doesn't quite make Ottawa and other Canadian cities comparable
to this urban nightmare on the Great Lakes.

Not yet anyway. But give the current administration
time.

The previous Conservative government made much of its criminal justice
legislation, managing to pass the Safe Streets and Communities Act
before being defeated in the 2015 federal election. The felon-hugging
Supreme Court, which consistently opposed the Conservatives on social
policy, began dismantling that act last April when it struck down two
key provisions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau quickly chimed his
support for the court's interference, reminding Canadians that he was
opposed to mandatory minimum prison sentences unless the affected
crime was murder.

Trudeau has been pursuing his own parallel anti-law and order agenda.
Despite the strong proven link between substance abuse and crime,
Trudeau is proceeding with a reckless marijuana legalization plan that
will provoke increased addiction and augmented use of other illegal
drugs. Most alarmingly, as marijuana use has been demonstrated as a
danger to mental health, we are endangering both the personal and
public safety of Canadians.

The prime minister also announced last week his intention to
facilitate the growth and placement of supervised injection sites by
making the process less contentious. Soon, communities across Canada
will enable addicts to sustain devastating and lethal addictions,
allow supervisors to break the law and create an urban landscape
littered with the refuse and paraphernalia of heroin use.

That's a direct assault on the Conservative's Respect for Communities
Act, which provided stringent measures and mandatory local
consultation before putting an addiction sustainment site in your backyard.

It all seems so unreal. But isn't unreality a hallmark of this Liberal
government? Trudeau marked 9-11 this year by missing the official
commemoration ceremony in Ottawa and going to a Montreal mosque - a
resoundingly odd gesture given that it was radical Islamic terrorists
who murdered thousands of innocent people on that day and did not
include a Muslim worship centre as a target.

And just listen to Trudeau and Environment Minister Catherine McKenna
talk about the carbon tax racket. As the prime minister threatens to
impose his own levy on provinces - like Saskatchewan - who aren't
drinking the Liberal Kool-Aid, I'm waiting for him to echo his father's
famous words in response to his own October Crisis: "just watch me."

Of course Trudeau and his quota cabinet really believe that taxing
Canadians at the pump is actually going to accomplish more than just
making us all poorer and assuaging their self-induced guilt.

But this is government that considers the fictional war on climate
change to dwarf the war on terror. Now that should be a crime.
