MENDOCINO COUNTY STILL CONSIDERING POT TAX FOR NOVEMBER BALLOT

Further progress could be made Monday in defining specifics of
whether or not a medical marijuana tax should be placed on the
Mendocino County ballot for voter consideration in November.

The Board of Supervisors' General Government Standing Committee will
discuss and likely provide direction to staff and possible
recommendations to the full board. The full board has given itself a
July 12 deadline to take initial action as to whether or not it wants
to proceed with a tax proposal.

Hdl Companies, a business management consultant, presented potential
taxation ideas to the supervisors last month including what the
levied tax should actually be, the option of taxing square-foot
cultivation, and a warning that excessive tax can send cultivators
into the black market. Estimates of as much as $100 million a year
have been tossed out as possible revenues from full legal marijuana
operations in this county.

The Executive Office is expected to continue researching the issue,
and per board direction, will bring information back including a
potential timeline for the Board of Supervisors to consider.

Under the recently implemented Medical Marijuana Regulation and
Safety Act, any county or city may propose a local tax measure on
medical marijuana for voter approval.

The Standing Committee Monday morning will also consider
recommendations on a permanent local cultivation ordinance and
cultivation site zoning amendment.
