MAYOR HIGH ON PEOPLE POWER

They may have the pot but Mayor John Tory says he's got the
people.

Tory said Friday that when it comes to the city cracking down on the
booming marijuana dispensary business, there is "substantial" public
support.

Warning notices delivered this week to shop owners were "perfectly
proper" and needs to be done because of growing concerns from
neighbourhoods across the city, he said.

The mayor stressed that he has heard from members of the public and
they want him to act.

"I will tell you, I feel I have substantial public support on this, in
terms of simply saying, 'What we're going to do is make sure this
happens in a more orderly fashion that is protective of public health,
that is protective of children and neighbourhoods,' " he said. "The
neighbourhoods don't want, on every street corner nearby them,
marijuana dispensaries, many of them, frankly bogus."

Tory, who was meeting with Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader
Patrick Brown, said the city simply can't wait for the federal
government to legalize marijuana in light of the booming dispensary
business.

Brown said he'd like to see the federal government address the
issue.

"Obviously there is a public mandate and a legal grey zone that was
created with the federal election, the fact that it's going to take
until 2017 before we see where Canada is going," he said. "It creates
a long period where it is undefined."
