SAFE INJECTION: IT'S NOT EITHER/OR

Re: People who trust evidence versus people who trust their guts, April 11.

The greatest problem I have had with the "conversations" about safe
injection sites is identified in Kate Heartfield's column: Treatment
and harm reduction are not two distinct paths. The only route to
treatment for some drug-dependent people is through harm reduction. To
not use that route is to deny evidence that has been consistent. Not
using the route for chronic dependency costs the health and criminal
justice systems far more than safe injection sites.

There is no one-size-fits-all in the field of addiction treatment and
rehabilitation. To refuse to consider harm reduction simply increases
the harm to some users and to society as a whole.
