ENABLING ADDICTS

Re "Needle site cost?" (Don Peat, March 17):

Enabling junkies to continue their habits is just wrong. I have met a
few in my time and when they are lucid they wish they were not hooked
and could get their life back. When the withdrawal hits, they have no
choice but to continue to sate their desire.

Providing opportunities to beat the withdrawal seems much more humane.
Get them off the drug, then you can work on the core mental issues that
drive them to make their poor choices and enable them to get their lives
back.

To offer to help them to continue their cycle of dependency just seems
that we are giving up on them. Safe injection sites, in my opinion, are
the easy way out. We might as well give them free drugs as well.
